I think, Henry is right: 50-100 words is ok should the potential client insist. On the other hand, a time-saving way of proving your experience, IMO, is to present excerpts from translation completed previously, of course, eliminating all client-related data, hints or whatever. Basicly, we do the same when posting a translation request here on the site.

SHORT tests: a way to ensure transparency and professionalism Dec 19, 2001

In our recent Toronto proz.com powwow we discussed the idea of actually ASKING the clients posting a job on Proz.com to have a 50-100 words test. To make a long reasoning short, and in view of the changes in bidding coming up in January (we will be paying wither with Browniz or with money for bidding), the test would ensure a more level playing field for all bidders, and would act as counterweight to the tendency to assign the job to the lowest bidder. Even the lowest bidder would have to prove his or her skills.

If this change is accepted, then all bids would have to be private, and the client would be asked to post the \"winning\" test.

We felt that this would be a way to also educate the client about quality and would further discourage those who are not comfortable in that specific field.

To complete, the transparency requirements, we discussed that all the bidders should be notified (yes or no, automatically as per Kudoz) and told what was the winning rate and winning test.

Hope this meets with some approval from others in other SC and geographical places.

Good idea, Paola! Dec 19, 2001

Even if the client does not require a test translation, posting an excerpt from the job gives potential bidders a better idea of the type of text involved, rather than saying \"Ge-En Technical\" or whatever.
