È un modo simpatico per dire "pirata" in inglese senza usare "pirate", usando una loro presunta espressione gergale. In italiano, per non usare un semplice "pirata" userei "bucaniere", visto anche che comunque si parla di zona caraibica.

Forse è preferibile aggiungere le virgolette per sottolineare che si tratta, appunto, di un termine gergale dei pirati di allora, attenuandone anche il valore negativo per armonizzarlo meglio con il registro bonario del brano.
