My income from freelancing and retirement from my full-time translation job matches the average income in the US (according to what I just looked up), but it is considerably higher than the median income. In a country with a lot of billionaires, average income is not very meaningful, IMO. If the question referred to average *translation* income, I suspect it's a lot higher than average or median.

In my country (Brazil), my income is well above the average. But if I lived in Europe or in North-America, it would be an average medium-class income or a little above it. I'm far from being rich either in Brazil or anywhere else, though, because I don't have valuable assets. After a divorce that washed it all away and more than 20 years of child support for three kids, two of them are in college and the third one is going to college this year.
