I must say though that we no longer work as regularly and as much as we used to but he is a beloved customer: over the years he has been paying like clockwork the day after receiving my invoice…

Not the best paying customer, but keeps coming back.

Another since 1987.

One more option Aug 22, 2018

I feel there should have been an option as 'From the time I started working' or something that applies to new comers.
I could select 1-2 years but there are a few with whom I continue to work since day one.

5-8 years = 4 clients Aug 23, 2018

I have four clients that have been sending me projects for 5-8 years. They represent over 50% of my income. I'm not sure how good or bad that is. Our market is a bit complicated and unstable.

One one hand, it's great, of course. It means these clients are satisfied with the quality and accuracy of my work, and their clients as well.

On the other hand, I've seen several supposedly regular clients simply disappear out of the blue, and this has happened many times without any explanation. Some closed their business; some decided to look for "peanuts", and I didn't fit in; some specialized in areas I don't work with... I mean, there are all kinds of factors.

So, the truth is we are always marketing and networking and finding new clients, because no stability or loyalty is assured whatsoever. I could guess an average of 12 new clients per year, and another 12 that have sent you work before and disappear forever.

Our business is not like a supermarket, in terms of clients, but it's surely not like a dentist, with forever faithful clients, either. We tend to be more like lawyers or doctors: some regulars, many "come-and-go".
