Source text - English Did Russia cause the Great War?
A new analysis of the origins of the First World War claims that Russia was the main culprit for the outbreak of the conflict.
It’s a view that contradicts the long-established contention that Austria-Hungary and Germany started what was to become one of the bloodiest wars in history.
The analysis examines the actions of the great powers in the run-up to war. It concludes that it was a Russian decision in early 1914 to become more assertive internationally that was “most destabilizing” and “most at odds with the diplomatic and political culture which had sustained peace in Europe for decades”.
The new examination of the origins of the war – carried out by a University College Dublin historian, William Mulligan – traces the origins of this more aggressive policy back to the dramatic events of 1905, the time of the Russo/Japanese War and the first Russian revolution. Mulligan believes that Russia’s defeat by Japan was a seminal countdown to 1914. The disaster, he says, had five key consequences. It persuaded Britain that Russia was no longer a military threat, and was therefore a potential partner. It also refocused Russian foreign policy towards the Balkans rather than the Far East.
Thirdly, through the partially successful revolution that it triggered – and the establishment of a relatively free press and Russia’s first parliament – the defeat gave pan-Slav, anti-German opposition politicians a voice.
It also weakened government and made it susceptible to potentially jingoistic public opinion. Finally, it was the first of a series of international indignities that Russia suffered between 1905 and 1914 that was to push it along the path to war.

Podle nového rozboru východisek první světové války bylo hlavním viníkem vypuknutí tohoto konfliktu Rusko.
Tento názor je v rozporu s dlouho uznávaným tvrzením, že to byly Rakousko-Uhersko a Německo, jež započaly válku, která se měla stát jednou z nejkrvavějších v historii.
Analýza zkoumá kroky velmocí v době před vypuknutím války. Dochází k závěru, že to bylo rozhodnutí Ruska z počátku roku 1914 stát se důraznějším v mezinárodních vztazích, jež „nejvyšší měrou destabilizovalo“ situaci a jež bylo „nejvíce v rozporu s diplomatickou a politickou kulturou, jež po desetiletí udržovala mír v Evropě“.
Nový výzkum příčin první světové války, provedený historikem University College v Dublinu Williamem Mulliganem, nachází původ této agresivnější politiky v dramatických událostech roku 1905, v době rusko-japonské války a první ruské revoluce. Source text - English The underlying pathophysiology of major depressive disorder has not been clearly defined. Clinical and preclinical trials suggest a disturbance in central nervous system (CNS) serotonin (5-HT) activity as an important factor. Other neurotransmitters implicated include norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA).
The role of CNS 5-HT activity in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder is suggested by the efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the treatment of major depressive disorder. Furthermore, studies have shown that an acute, transient relapse of depressive symptoms can be produced in research subjects in remission using tryptophan depletion, which causes a temporary reduction in CNS 5-HT levels. Serotonergic neurons implicated in affective disorders are found in the dorsal raphe nucleus, the limbic system, and the left prefrontal cortex.
Seasonal affective disorder is a form of major depressive disorder that arises during the winter and resolves during the spring and summer. Studies suggest that seasonal affective disorder is also mediated by alterations in CNS levels of 5-HT and appears to be triggered by alterations in circadian rhythm and sunlight exposure.
Vascular lesions may contribute to depression by disrupting the neural networks involved in emotion regulation—in particular, frontostriatal pathways that link dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, and dorsal cingulate. Other components of limbic circuitry, in particular the hippocampus and amygdala, have been implicated in depression.
Functional neuroimaging studies support the hypothesis that the depressed state is associated with decreased metabolic activity in neocortical structures and increased metabolic activity in limbic structures. In recent years, an abnormality in an area of the brain that helps to control emotional reactions has been found and contributes to a new understanding of why persons develop depression and other affective disturbances.
By using positron emission tomographic (PET) images, researchers found an area of the prefrontal cortex with an abnormally diminished activity in patients with unipolar depression and bipolar depression. This region is related to emotional response and has widespread connections with other areas of the brain. These other areas are responsible for the regulation of DA, noradrenaline, and 5-HT, which have important roles in the regulation of mood.
An integrative model of late-onset depression posits that age-related brain changes and disease-related changes (eg, cerebrovascular disease), coupled with physiologic vulnerabilities (eg, genetic risk factors, personal history of depression) and psychosocial adversity, lead to disruptions in the functional circuitry of emotion regulation (namely, hypometabolism of cortical structures and hypermetabolism of limbic structures), resulting in the clinical manifestations of depression.
Endocrine changes in depression are evident across the life span, but some are unique to aging. Women with a previous history of depression are at higher risk of developing depression during menopause, suggesting a role for estrogen in mood regulation; low testosterone levels have been associated with depression in older men.

Translation - Czech Základní patofyziologie deprese nebyla doposud zcela objasněna. Klinické a předklinické studie naznačují, že důležitým faktorem při vzniku choroby je porucha aktivity serotoninu (5-HT) v centrální nervové soustavě (CNS). Dalšími možnými neurotransmitery ovlivňujícími vznik choroby mohou být norepinefrin (NE) a dopamin (DA).
V patofyziologii deprese lze význam aktivity serotoninu v CNS odvodit z efektivity selektivních inhibitorů zpětného vychytávání serotoninu (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRIs) nasazených při léčbě deprese. Studie navíc prokázaly, že u subjektů výzkumu, jejichž stav se zlepšuje, lze dosáhnout akutního přechodného zhoršení syndromů deprese prostřednictvím deplace tryptofanu, což vede k dočasnému snížení hladiny serotoninu v CNS. Serotonergní neurony hrající roli při vzniku emočních onemocnění najdeme v dorsálním jádru švu, v limbickém systému a levém prefrontálním kortexu.
Sezónní afektivní porucha je formou deprese, která vzniká během zimního období a zlepšuje se na jaře a v létě. Mnohé studie prokazují, že je vyvolána také prostřednictvím změn hladiny serotoninu v CNS, a zdá se, že i změnami cirkadiánního rytmu a vystavení slunečnímu záření.
K depresi mohou přispívat i vaskulární léze, a to narušením neuronových sítí podílejících se na regulaci emocí - zejména pak frontostriatálních drah spojujících dorsolaterální prefrontální kortex, orbitofrontální kortex, anteriorní a dorsální cingulární kortex. Na depresi se mohou podílet i další součásti limbického systému, zejména hipokampus a amygdala.
Funkční neurozobrazovací studie podporují hypotézu, že stav deprese je spojen se sníženou metabolickou aktivitou neokortikálních struktur a zvýšenou metabolickou aktivitou struktur limbických. V posledních letech byla v oblasti mozku, jež pomáhá kontrolovat emocionální reakce, objevena jistá abnormalita; to přispělo k hlubšímu porozumění skutečnosti, proč se u některých lidí rozvine deprese či jiné emoční poruchy.
S využitím zobrazení pozitronové emisní tomografie (PET) objevili vědci u pacientů s unipolární i bipolární depresí oblast prefrontálního kortexu s abnormálně sníženou aktivitou. Tato oblast souvisí s emocionálními reakcemi a je složitě propojena s ostatními částmi mozku. Ty zodpovídají za regulaci DA, noradrenalinu a serotoninu, jež hrají při regulaci nálady důležitou roli.
Integrační model deprese počínající v pozdějším věku předpokládá, že změny mozku spojené s věkem i jistými chorobami (například chorobami cerebrovaskulárními) a kombinované s fyziologickou zranitelností (například dědičné faktory, osobní historie deprese) a psychosociální nepřízní vedou k poruchám ve funkční soustavě regulace emocí (zejména hypometabolismu kortikálních struktur a hypermetabolismu struktur limbických) a následně tedy ke klinickým projevům deprese.
Endokrinní změny provázející depresi jsou evidentní v průběhu celého života, některé jsou však spojeny výhradně se stárnutím. Ženy s předchozím výskytem deprese jsou vystaveny většímu riziku onemocnění depresí během menopauzy, což dokládá význam estrogenu při regulaci nálady; naopak snížená hladina testosteronu bývá spojována s depresí u starších mužů.

Source text - English New installed capacity of renewable power – especially wind and solar photovoltaics – is much larger than new installations of nuclear power by an order of magnitude for over a decade. In fact, the overall capacity of the fleet of nuclear power plants is in constant decline. For example, in the European Community ̶ over 6,000 megawatts (MW) of installed nuclear reactor capacity was retired during 2011 and only 311 MW of new capacity was added to the electricity grid. In the same period, over 30,000 MW of new wind and solar capacity was connected to the grid. The Greenpeace Global Energy [R]evolution scenario shows that sources of renewable energy could supply 38% of global power demand by 2020 and 95% by 2050.
The growth of renewable energy has been unprecedented over the past 25 years. Wind and solar have maintained double-digit growth rates since 2000. No other segment of the energy sector has grown this fast. Wind power is the most economic new power plant technology, due to reduced installations costs, no fuel costs and construction time of less than one year, compared to over 10 years to construct nuclear power plants. In addition to replacing nuclear, renewables could lead to phasing out of over 90% of fossil fuels in the power and heating sectors by 2050, while in the transport sector the use of fossil fuels could be reduced from the current 98% down to about 30% by 2050.
Countries can create an indigenous, locally produced energy supply based on renewables and cut the drain on their resources of buying energy. Since renewable energy doesn't have fuel costs, the global savings on fuel costs could be $282 billion a year through to 2030 and about $964 billion a year from 2030 to 2050.
Translation - Czech Výkon nově instalovaných zdrojů obnovitelné energie - zejména energie větrné a solární fotovoltaické - je mnohem vyšší než výkon nově instalovaných jaderných reaktorů - zvýšil se o celý jeden řád v rozmezí jednoho desetiletí. Celkový výkon jaderných elektráren se naopak neustále snižuje. V Evropském společenství byly například v roce 2011 odstaveny jaderné reaktory o výkonu přes 6 000 megawattů (MW) a nově byly k elektrické rozvodné síti připojeny reaktory o výkonu pouze 311 MW. Ve stejném období bylo do elektrické sítě přivedeno přes 30 000 MW energie získané z větrných a solárních zdrojů. Scénář Globální energetické (r)evoluce, sestavený organizací Greenpeace, ukazuje, že zdroje obnovitelné energie by mohly do roku 2020 uspokojit 38% a do roku 2050 95% světové energetické poptávky.
Během posledních 25 let došlo k neočekávanému růstu výroby a spotřeby obnovitelné energie. Od roku 2000 se hodnoty růstu větrné i solární energie pohybují v řádu dvojmístných čísel. Žádné jiné energetické odvětví takový růst nezaznamenalo. Větrná energie je nejhospodárnější novou technologií na výrobu energie zejména díky sníženým nákladům na montáž, nulovým nákladům na palivo a době výstavby obvykle kratší než jeden rok (ve srovnání s více než 10 lety výstavby elektráren jaderných). Další výhodou obnovitelných zdrojů nahrazujících energii jadernou by bylo ukončení užívání více než 90% fosilních paliv v energetickém průmyslu a průmyslu topných paliv do roku 2050, zatímco spotřeba fosilních paliv v dopravě by mohla být do roku 2050 snížena ze současných 98% na zhruba 30%.
Jednotlivé země by mohly využít lokálně produkovanou energii založenou na obnovitelných zdrojích, a snížit tak náklady na její nákup. Jelikož obnovitelná energie nevyžaduje náklady na palivo, globální úspory v této oblasti by mohly do roku 2030 dosáhnout 282 miliard dolarů ročně a mezi léty 2030 a 2050 kolem 964 miliard dolarů ročně.

I am a qualified and experienced translator living in the UK since 2004. I started working as a full time translator after ten years of teaching career (I taught history and Czech language and literature), nearly five years of working as an administrator in a busy parish and several years of translating part time when I gained the necessary experience. I have a solid academic background (I successfully completed three university courses including Diploma in Translation), wide general knowledge and excellent writing and research skills. I have a very good grasp of both written and spoken, formal and informal English, which has become my language of habitual use; the daily live contact with my source language gives me the advantage of familiarity with many of its expressions and uses.
