Bio

English to Czech translator specialising in medical and healthcare translation, social sciences, public sector and e-learning

I am a qualified and experienced translator living in the UK since 2004. I started working as a full time translator after ten years of teaching career (I taught history and Czech language and literature), nearly five years of working as an administrator in a busy parish and several years of translating part time when I gained the necessary experience. I have a solid academic background (I successfully completed three university courses including Diploma in Translation), wide general knowledge and excellent writing and research skills. I have a very good grasp of both written and spoken, formal and informal English, which has become my language of habitual use; the daily live contact with my source language gives me the advantage of familiarity with many of its expressions and uses.

I translate texts in the following fields: healthcare, medical and pharmaceutical (clinical trials documentation, regulatory affairs, cardiology, pharmacology, optometry, patient questionnaires, clinical trials contracts etc.), social sciences, public sector and legal documents (English and Scottish law), psychometric tests, e-learning documentation, catholic theology and literature.

During the years I have also acquired considerable experience in proofreading and editing, and currently also offer linguistic analysis and translation/language tuition. In May 2015 I have been elected as a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists' Translating Division Committee, and until 2019 I was helping to organise divisional events. I hold Professional Indemnity Insurance.

My article Prescriptive work on translating medical regulatory affairs and clinical trials documents was published in the August-September 2017 issue of The Linguist, the bi-monthly magazine of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (pages 16-17).

Here are some examples of my translation work (please see also the sample portfolio above):

Pharmaceutical, medical and healthcare

- Translation of five books from the series Books Beyond Words on the subject of sexual abuse and depression in people with learning disabilities (approx. 25,000 words)
- Clinical research documents, summaries of product characteristics (CTDs), protocol summaries, informed consent documents, patient questionnaires, product information, package leaflets, labels etc.; quality management and reconciliation of medical texts
- Examples of the terminology used: list of excipients; oromucosal surface; titration period; cytochrome P450 enzymes; pharmacokinetic parameters; adverse events; placebo controlled trial; Modified Ashworth Score; multicentre, non-comparative open-label study; Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT); double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled, parallel group study; hepatic first pass metabolism etc.

Social sciences, public sector and legal

- Official documents (marriage, birth and education certificates)
- Business correspondence, training and marketing literature, e-learning texts, psychometric tests, accompanying texts to public photographic exhibitions, tourist guides
- Legal documents (English and Scottish law) - contracts, clinical trials contracts, child protection plans, information for the public, letters, brochures etc.
- Forms, questionnaires, safety plans and instructions, evacuation procedures etc.

Catholic theology

- Website translation - ongoing project (Campaign for the ordination of women in the RC Church - Womenpriests) - approx. 30,000 words
- Examples of the terminology used: women's ministries; ordination of women; infallible doctrine; latent tradition; sense of faith; Vatican Council II; one priesthood; ordinary and universal magisterium; full sacramental diaconate etc.

Translation/language tuition

-I offer translation tuition or specialist language advice.

I hold the following qualifications

Diploma in Translation IoLET, English to Czech (2010)
Master's Degree in history and pedagogy (1994)
Postgraduate course in Czech language and literature (2000)

I am a full member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK (membership number 024492), and a Qualified member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, UK (membership number 18156). In order to ensure, that my work is always of the highest professional standard and to keep pace with the latest developments in the translation field, I regularly attend various CPD events.
