English term

flanging

English Tech/Engineering Other
What is the meaning of 'flanging' in this context? This is from a manual for a home theatre system.
Thanks.

Flanging sound effect

— FLANGER

You can flange the sound output with the sound flange function.

You can either create a deep flanging effect that is similar to the roar of a jet plane, or a standard flanging tone.

Notes

• You can only select the FLANGER effect in DVD function.

• If you activate FLANGER, during disc recording, the sound effect will recorded onto the tape.

~phasing

though a phaser is a musical effect on it's own and not identical to a flanger
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, it's a kind of musical special effect, popular in the 60s and 70s, that makes voices etc. sound a bit 'spacey'
