I'm not sure that the actual rank is important in this context. The point is that this man is a military officer performing legal duties or service.

It ocurrs to me that you could include the military rank in the man's name and title: "legal officer and criminologist, (Second) Lieutenant Miguel Fernández Rivera", or something of the sort. Suerte!
