Discussion

Ken Cox Feb 7, 2007:
Fully agree with jccantrell. It's conceivably possible to use WAF as an abbreviation, but only after explaining it first -- and even then it's not common usage.
jccantrell Feb 7, 2007:
You might want to rethink the text and instead of trying to use an abbreviation, put the text in something like 13 mm, 11 mm and 10 mm wrenches, or some such.
jccantrell Feb 7, 2007:
I do frequent hardware stores and I have never heard or seen WAF. If I want a 13 mm wrench, I go and ask for a 13 mm wrench. I believe that, at least in the USA, we do not use an abbreviation for this. We just specify the size in either inches or metric.
Johanna Timm, PhD Feb 6, 2007:
Google for "WAF+ wrench size" and "sw + werkzeuggröße" to compare.
Can't give you more info than that.... I try to avoid hardware stores :-)
Michael Harris (asker) Feb 6, 2007:
Thanks for the answers but is the WAF a commenly used term in the world or has it just been shortened for the certain purpose?

agree Alan Johnson : If you go into a hardware store and ask for a 13mm spanner and you want an open-jaw, what do you do when you are given a ring? You say you want 13mm across flats.

agree Johannes Gleim : is OK, but not as common as wrench size. (17.600 google hits, compared to 29.900 for wrench size) // Changed grading as your proposal is right as well as my.

As you can see from my CL, I was less than sure about my own proposal. I'm glad there were techies out there to clear things up for Michael.

neutral Lancashireman : 'abr.' is an abbreviation for 'abbreviation' // If you read the question again, this comment may become comprehensible. It is about asker's criteria.

Your comment is incomprehensible as I did not use "abr." // but the asker. Thank youu for this hint.
disagree Alan Johnson : Wrench size tells you absolutely nothing about the type of spanner, whereas across flats does. If intended for a BE audience, googling "wrench" is totally irrelevant anyway. Spanner size would still be wrong because it tells you nothing about the type.

Both expressions (width across flats and wrench size) are used and common. You may accept both or delete your comment;
