Barra de aportación

Discussion

psicutrinius Apr 13, 2012:
Yes, Noni Looking at it again, it seems that they are talking about damage to the COATING rather than the steel pipe itself and, yes, if "masilla de poliuretano" is an option, then surely the "barra de aportación" must also be a polymer/thermoset plastic, though they are VERY vague about the "aportación" itself as far as the material is concerned. There should also be an explanation about how to use the "barra de aportación" or, more precisely, how to apply it.

But if so, then no welding terminology applies: A "rod" it is, certainly, but it is neither metal nor electrode, nor even filler rod if filler is understood as metal filler as it is usually in welding processes.

Perhaps "coating repair filler rod" would apply?
Noni Gilbert Riley Apr 13, 2012:
Fillers A wide range of materials can be used as fillers (in this case to recreate the coating around the steel): there are a huge number of polymers to choose from with a wide variety of reniforcements to suit each situation, as well as the metals used in repair through welding. The fillers can be applied through many processes - sprayed, welded, applied with a spatula, etc.

Since they mention it, we could consider polyurethane, which is one of the most adaptable polymers, and can be thermoset or thermoplastic, or even in elastic or foam forms. Since it can be in thermoplastic form it can be rigid or flexible, and could therefore be available for repair in rigid form, prepared for the application of heat.
Any repair process is going to have to try to prevent damage to the adjacent steel, and heat is going to be a major factor....

welding rod / filler rod

Welding rod

Welding rod is the name for filler metal in wire or rod form, used in gas welding and brazing processes and in those arc welding processes in which the electrode does not provide the filler metal. It is also known as "filler rod."[1]

Sorry, forgot to add a Spanish ref I found. Not many hits for your term on the Net.

Fill welds Welds in which a filler metal is deposited into the joint from an electrode or welding rod, fusing with the base metal on each side.

Filler metal The metal that is deposited into the joint from an electrode or welding rod in order to achieve a weld of desired properties.

Following on from the discussion above, that the material is likely to be some kind of plastic in this case and not metal, the link I gave originally for welding rod talks about a plastic welding rod, and this link below specifically shows polyurethane welding rods, so, as far as I understand it, the process is still welding even if it's not metal (but I'm not an expert!).

This link below talks about a polyurethane filler rod (the process is still welding), so filler rod does not just refer to metal (apparently).

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Filler rod (since it does say barra). Not necessarily welding here, and not necessarily metal being used.

Thanks Noni. They are supposed to be synonyms, and I think it probably is welding
