Yes, one would need quotes around "life". I'd risk the awkward and say something like "of what is considered living".

This section of my text is a philosophical assessment of synthetic biology. There is an underlying notion of "natural" versus "synthetic" life, so am not sure if the author is really implying "naturally occurring organisms", or life in all its aspects, including synthetically created forms...

The chemoton is an autocatalytic chemical supersystem that satisfies the criteria of life. It consists of three autocatalytic subsystems: a metabolic subsystem (self-reproducing chemical cycle), an informational subsystem (template polymerization cycle) and a boundary subsystem surrounding the former two (membrane). The chemical reactions of the three subsystems are coupled stoichiometrically, which coordinates the growth and division of the cell thus helping the system to be autocatalytic as a whole.

I wouldn't think quotation marks would be necessary if it's for a scientific community.

agree Anne Schulz : The original sounds to me like "criteria for one out of several possible ways to define life" (rather than *the* criteria of life), so one might need to add some sort of limitation or reservation
