Rift in the lute

English to Portuguese Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Film: Winter meeting (Bette Davis - 1948)
Contexto: A Bette Davis e um amigo dela estão jantando num restaurante. A Bette Davis conseguiu conquistar o coração de um herói de guerra que esse amigo dela lhe apresentou. Mas a relação não progrediu, pois o herói tinha problemas de consciência. Mas o amigo da Bette não sabia de nada. E ele comenta que ela conseguiu pegar o herói e a Bette diz: "Consegui?"
E ele responde: "Mas você conseguiu, não é?". E ele se dá conta que algo aconteceu pela reação da Bette.
E aí ele diz: "Acho que o que aconteceu é o que vulgarmente se chama: a rift in the lute".
Por favor, como vocês traduziriam essa expressão idiomática, levando-se em conta o contexto?

Olá Teresa! Eu sabia que a expressão queria dizer pouca sorte. Mas logo após essa fala, a Bette Davis responde: "More than a rift". Literalmente a rift in the lute significa uma fenda no alaúde. E a Bette Davis quando diz: "more than a rift" estaria querendo dizer: mais do que uma fenda. Ou seja, houve uma quebra, uma ruptura total pois o herói partiu sem se despedir. Por isso eu precisaria uma tradução que eu pudesse usar essa expressão em português e logo depois traduzir a fala da Bette Davis como: mais do que uma simples fenda, rachadura. A não ser que eu usasse a tua tradução e depois traduzisse a fala da Bette Davis como: mais do que apenas pouca sorte. Ainda não sei, vou esperar mais contribuições para poder chegar a uma conclusão definitiva. Muito obrigado!
