Spanish term

azohados

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
This is a progress note from a Colombian discharge summary. The patient was admitted for very high glucose numbers. The sentence is, " pte con episodios de nauseas y malestar asociad a cifras de glucosa elevadas y azohados elevados en el momento asintomatico." There are many gaps in the text, misspelled words, and little to no punctuation. I think "azohados" is a misspelling of "azoados" and it looks like the word is related to the English word "azoate", an obsolete term for nitrogen. But beyond that, I'm stumped. "Nitrogen numbers" is a guess and doesn't sound like anything I ever heard spoken that was associated with elevated glucose. Is there anyone here familiar with this term?

Anne Louise (asker) Jan 7, 2018:
Thanks to everyone That was incredibly fast! So we all agree it's about nitrogen! I'm aware of the comorbidities of diabetes and also with renal function testing; however, none of that is mentioned here. I'm reluctant to add more specificity than there is in the source though - so "elevated nitrogen compounds" sounds about right. Thanks again!
Charles Davis Jan 7, 2018:
Yes It's a symptom of kidney problems, and it is an issue with diabetes:

"Una manera de evitar que la persona con Diabetes llegue a las dos últimas etapas, es estar pendiente del nivel de proteínas y azoados (urea, creatinina y ácido úrico) que presentan sus exámenes de orina y sangre."
https://www.diabetesbienestarysalud.com/nutricion/lo-que-no-...

So it's not just BUN (blood urea nitrogen).

Hi Anne I found this glossary entry that will help you (I agree with you that it looks like a typo for azoados). Make sure to also read the entry in the discussion section posted by Joseph Tein.

Heidi Newby-Rose Jan 7, 2018:
As agitation, confusion or inability to concentrate are symptoms of hyperglycemia "periods of heightened agitation" or restlessness could well be possible - elevados doesn't need to be measured, only observed. Just a suggestion that you might want to keep in mind if you run out of options! :-)
Anne Louise (asker) Jan 7, 2018:
I don't think so. The term is "azogados elevados", indicating it's something that is measured.
Heidi Newby-Rose Jan 7, 2018:
Could also be a misspelling of "azogados" referring to periods of restlessness or fidgeting, which would fit in with the context "azohados elevados en el momento asintomatico"

22 oct. 2016 - Prerenal azotemia is common, especially in people who are in the hospital. The kidneys filter the blood. They also make urine to remove waste products. Azotemia - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azotemia
Primary renal azotemia - Azotemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of nitrogen-containing compounds in the blood. It is largely related to insufficient or dysfunctional filtering of blood by the kidneys. It can lead to uremia and acute kidney injury (kidney failure) if not controlled.
Note from asker:
But azotemiam is a diagnosis. This only describes elevated test numbers. I have to translate what I see, and not put words in the Source physician's mouth - even if we all are correct. We are conduits for the message, not supposed to add our own thoughts to the message. I can't accept this and am going with "elevated nitrogen compounds" because that more closely matches the source.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Charles Davis : I thought of this too, but it doesn't necessarily refer only to blood; it could include levels in urine.

agree David Brown : In style with the text; "azotemia" these days is used to describe elevated N compounds in bllod an/or urine
