The LASER THERAPY
Laser treatment is the routine treatment option (standard of care) for ROP.
It is applied on the retina where normal blood vessels have not formed yet (avascular retina).
The goal of laser therapy is to burn the avascular retina and prevent the growth of abnormal blood vessels.
It also reduces the growth of abnormal vessels and helps the disease get better (regress).
The main goal of laser treatment is to avoid the complication of retinal detachment.

The procedure
Laser therapy is usually done with sedation or general anaesthesia and pain medication.
The procedure may be done in the operating room.
The eye is numbed using special eye drops and the pupil is dilated with eye drops.
Treatment takes about 30-45 minutes per eye.
After the procedure, anti-inflammatory steroid eye drops are often prescribed for one week to reduce local inflammation.
Pain killers are seldom needed.
The baby’s eye lids may be a little puffy for one day after the procedure.
