Having seen the previous ProZ answers and 'glossed over' my own DEU/ENG glossary, I reckon that the contrast and evidentiary focus - for any possible claim against the supplier - shifts on short-lived Durchgangsgeschäften (transit dealings?) from the Der Lieferant mit Einwand einer verspäteten Mängelrüge to the Rüge des Abnehmers > the customer's complaint or outlet/consumer's notice of defects.
How abstellen differs from 'absehen' I've never been quite able to fathom, namely nachvollziehen.
