Spanish term
no preciso estertores
Spanish to English
Medical
Medical (general)
Respiratory system
In a medical report by a Madrid doctor, the doctor sums up his examination of the patient's respiratory system as follows: "APARATO RESPIRATORIO: MV AUDIBLE, NO PRECISO ESTERTORES". I see from the Internet that this phrase, "No preciso estertores", appears in other medical reports, but I can't find anything explaining what it means. Is "preciso" a verb here? Any help is appreciated.

no detectable rales/wheezing
Although the Spanish may be written in the first person, I definitely wouldn't use first person in a report in English, sounds very unnatural and informal; it's the wrong register for a medical report.

: Crakles or rales, but no wheezing; I may be wrong, but crackles (or rales; crepitantes, "estertores") are not the same as wheezing (sibilantes).

Note from asker:
Thanks very much for your contribution. I went with "crackles" in the end, but with Neil's wording and tone. |

I do not discern wheezing

Hello Neil, you are correct, I realised that 'no wheezing discerned' was more appropriate as I posted 'I do not discern....'. You're also correct, in my opinion, with 'no discernible wheezing'.

Hi Neil, IMO you're right, I was a bit hasty, the correct answer should be: "no wheezing discerned" or, as you suggested, "no discernible wheezing".

Thanks for your contribution. I'm taking note of "no discernable .....", in case I ever run up against "no preciso" again. |

Neil Ashby
: I agree with "no wheezing discerned" (or no discernible wheezing), but "I do not discern" sounds unnatural and is the wrong register, IMO, for a medical report.
