Spanish term

actividades de prevención y promoción de la salud

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care Obstetrics Gynaecology Pr
COMPETENCIAS

Desarollar actividades de prevención y promoción de la salud de la mujer en todas las etapas del ciclo vital

I would translate it as something like "activities for health promotion and disease prevention" but I wondered if there was a set phrase that is neater.

Thanks

ormiston Sep 14, 2022:
Using infinitives might sound more natural i e. "working to promote health and prevent disease"
Muriel Vasconcellos Sep 14, 2022:
@Robert You posted your note while I was written mine above.
The World Health Organization establishes nomenclature in many fields: the ICD, drug names (International Nonproprietary Names and Classification of Medical Products (INN)) and proprietary names, disease names (COVID), and on and on. It also establishes phrases in the health field (e.g., ' primary health care') Admittedly, some are departed from or translated in other ways, but it is everyone's interests to keep them uniform.
Catherine Mactaggart (asker) Sep 14, 2022:
I'm inclined to agree with you, Robert.

Also, "preventative healthcare" by itself is a great suggestion, but when including the other term I still run into problems: ie "preventative healthcare and health promotion"? or "preventative and promotative healthcare"? (I'm not serious about the latter)
Muriel Vasconcellos Sep 14, 2022:
@Robert I was composing my note above when you posted yours. It addresses to up your points. WHO also invented COVID. It has been accepted internationally.
Muriel Vasconcellos Sep 14, 2022:
Principles of terminology One of the General Principles of Terminology (GPT) is to avoiding generating competing terms for the same concept. The term 'prevention and health promotion' is adopted internationally - where it good makes sense or not. In the answer I cited, among others:
Search term
An Encyclopedia title
Title of a journal
An academic discipline

Since, according to GPT, competing terms cause condition and duplicating research (!), I would humbly suggest that translators just accept what is already decided on by international institutions.
Robert Carter Sep 14, 2022:
If you look at any references to this field, "prevention" is clearly shorthand for "disease prevention". Other choices for describing this seem to include "preventive medicine" and "preventive healthcare" (the latter works best, IMO). If Muriel is indeed right that the WHO uses "health prevention," then as writers we would be wrong to encourage the use of what is so clearly a risible English turn of phrase (most likely originating from some international-NGO behemoth that perpetuated mistranslations of "prevención sanitaria" or the equivalent in some other Romance language).

"health prevention" is simply illogical.
agree Robert Carter : "Health prevention" would clearly be an unfortunate choice of phrase here to describe what is in fact the opposite of "preventing health". Even Muriel's own references talk about "disease prevention", and let's face it, what else would they be preventing?

I concur - "health prevention" is simply illogical. It reminds me, kind of, of "criminal justice" - another unfortunate turn of phrase. Thank you, Robert.

Note from asker:
Thanks Muriel. But are you saying that it's valid to use the term "prevention and health promotion" without "disease" or any subject for "prevention" ? I can see in two of your examples, that "disease" is included, in one it isn't.
I meant to add - what would be prevented, if not diseases? Something general like "negative outcomes", I suppose?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Robert Carter : I don't doubt your credentials, Muriel, yet I see no references to "health prevention" (which would be the opposite of what it means), only "disease prevention" (which you claim is too narrow). Plus, you haven't used "health prevention" here either.

I"m saying that the discipline This is the phrase adopted by WHO and any intl. agencies. As for "disease promotion": For example: Many people who smoke don't get a disease, but those who don't smoke tend to be more healthy.
