Door draden van bouwplank naar tegenoverliggende bouwplank te voeren wordt de plaats van de fundering aangegeven. De planken worden op de juiste hoogte op de paaltjes aangebracht zodat de bovenkant ervan de juiste hoogte (het peil) aangaf. Ook worden op de bouwplanken de stramienlijnen van het bouwwerk aangegeven. Vaak worden ook in de hoekpunten van het terrein piketten of planken geplaatst.
