Het gaat hier niet over kandidaten die uit Mantsjoerije komen! Heeft het gebruik van Manchurian hier misschien iets te maken met de film The Manchurian Candidate?

ik vermoed dat het een zin met een knipoog is; inderdaad onder verwijzing naar het boek/de film The Manchurian Candidate. Kan het zijn dat er bedoeld wordt dat het kapitalisme steeds meer een Orientaalse vorm krijgt in je context? Dan verwijst Manchurian daar wellicht naar.

Ik moet wel een vertaling gebruiken; ik kan niet zomaar aannemen dat de lezers van de vertaalde recensie de film hebben gezien of het boek hebben gelezen. De suggestie van Crionn vond ik ook heel goed, maar net iets minder ludiek... Helaas kan ik de punten niet verdelen."

Mantsjoerije is het Noordoosten van China en daar is de zware industrie gevestigd (van oudsher), vooral de staalindustrie. Misschien als synoniem voor ondernemers.

Ik denk niet dat dit de connotatie is in jouw stuk, maar wilde het je niet onthouden: In fact, calling someone from Northeast China a \"Manchurian\" (Manzhouren) may be construed as an insult, since this can be taken as implying that the person is a collaborationist and separatist; both of these concepts are usually viewed as deeply repugnant.

By the 19th century, Manchu rule had become increasingly sinicized and, along with other borderlands of the Chinese Empire such as Mongolia and Tibet, came under the influence of colonial powers.

In the original, Sinatra and friends are kidnapped in Korea and drugged and brainwashed in China where one becomes an unwitting puppet of their government, hence, “The Manchurian Candidate.” In the new version, the action switches to Iraq, so shouldn’t the brainwashed guy become “The Fallujah Candidate” or something?

TITLE is a somewhat odd choice, in this film at least. The candidate is Iselin. Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), brainwashed in the Chinese province of Manchuria, is never a candidate for anything - at least, not a candidate for public office.
