English to Hebrew Tech/Engineering Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright Software license agreements
I can't work out what "adaptations" mean in the context of Software license agreements.

In the agreement I'm translating, it is allowed to make "copies and adaptations of the software for archiving purposes".

I understand "copies", but what adaptations can one make in a piece of software without breaking the clause about "no changes should be made to the program"?

I don't want just to translate blindly into

שלום דורון,
רק היום ראיתי את חילופי הדברים בפורום הזה ואני מבקש להוסיף כמה מילים, גם אם קצת מאוחר. הנושא שבו מדובר אלו הן הפעולות שמותר לכעשות גדי "לגנוז" את התוכנה בארכיב כזה או אחר. לדוגמה, מותר לך לדחוס את הקבצים או לבצע פעולות אחרות, כמו המרת קידוד שמצמצמות את גודלם.
מהמונחים שהוצעו בדיון "סובלים" מהעמסת יתר של משמועויות ואני, במקרה זה, הייתי נמנע משימוש בהם.
אני מציע להשתמש במונח "סיגול" (ראה אתר האקדמיה - מילון מונחי מינהל ציבורי) שמתאר בדיוק את הפעולה ולא גורר למשמעויות זרות.

Both answer appear in publications but But עיבוד could be mistaken as processing so I prefer התאמה.

Opinion I don't think עיבוד is commonly used in this context and would opt for התאמות. Example:
התאמת התוכנה לצרכי הלקוח.

More Besides ZIP or RAR "adaptation", software is not a monolithic single "thing" - it is a collection of files, folders, etc. including TXT files of INI type or other that contain user-accessible parameters that may be changed to adapt the software for a certain environment. The software may also support private "labeling" - with the customer's logo shown on screen.

In this context, change is one thing and means taking the software and amending it -- adding, removing, or changing features and properties; and Adaptation is making every necessary change in order to adjust the software to the backup/archive platform. There might be more fine differences that I don't know of, but I know that in the context of archiving a software, שינוי is used also to describe Adaptation for backup/archiving purposes. This is to the best of my knowledge. I'm not even remotely an expert in the field.

Shay, they specifically forbid "changing/modifying" the software in any way... That's why I got confused here.

Exactly, we were just thinking about it at this same moment, it might also include any backup software which will change the tree view of the software files

Just a thought as I'm really not in my element here... but maybe if you use an archive format of a file like ZIP or RAR or the like it's considered an adaptation? It also makes sense since it's used for archiving purposes.

הי דורון, גם אני ראיתי את השאלה באיחור, רק היום, אך כדאי לציין, בהמשך לנאמר ובהתאם לבחירתך הנכונה במונח התאמה, את דבריו של עו"ד עוז חיים, המצוטטים להלן, התומכים במונח הנבחר ומסבירים אותו:
שימושים מותרים בתוכנות מחשב

חוק זכות יוצרים החדש קבע רשימה של 3 שימושים המותרים לעשייה למי שמחזיק עותק מורשה של תוכנת מחשב, וזאת מבלי לקבל את רשותו של בעל זכות היוצרים בתוכנה. ההגיון שעמד מאחורי קביעת היתרים אלה הוא רצון המחוקק, לאפשר פיתוח תוכנות חדשות וניצול יעיל יותר של תוכנות קיימות. נציין, כי מהלך זה זכה להתנגדות חריפה חברות התוכנה השונות.

נציג בקצרה פעולות או היתרים אלו:

א. העתקה לצרכי גיבוי: על פי היתר זה, מי שמחזיק עותק מורשה רשאי לבצע גיבוי לתוכנה ובתנאי שישמיד את העותק עם חלוף הצורך בו.

ב. העתקה לצורך תחזוקה או מתן שירות: ההיתר מאפשר העתקת התוכנה לצורך תחזוקה או שירות ואינו מחייב השמדת העותק בתום הפעולות הללו, כפי שמתחייב מיוצר עותק לצורך גיבוי.

ג. העתקה ועשיית יצירה נגזרת: היתר זה מונה שלוש מטרות שלשמן מותרת העתקה או יצירה נגזרת:

(1) שימוש בתוכנה, תיקון שגיאות והתאמת התוכנה למערכת מחשב או תוכנית מחשב אחרת.

(2) בדיקה של אבטחת מידע ותיקון פרצות באבטחת המידע והגנה עליהן.

(3) התאמת תוכנה אחרת (הנדסה חוזרת) להשגת המידע הדרוש להביא לתאימות אופרטיבית עם תוכנה אחרת.
