Don't think it actually stands for anything. It is more of a tracking or reference number or "tag" that contains a unique set of details. This includes lot numbers, expiration dates, etc. This tag can be put on anything that you want. The idea is that it is a small barcode or "tag" of some kind.
If you have quantities of a part with different details, i.e. lot number, they can't be stored using the same "tag".
