@Cynthia Many thanks for your feedback and comments.Regards :)
Cynthia Coan Jan 28, 2011:
To "cranesfreak" Thank you for your detailed and thorough explanation of luffing and its application to cranes. It's good to know how it can apply to cranes and not just boats and sailing! Hopefully others have also benefited from your crane "tutorial."
cranesfreak Jan 27, 2011:
@Cynthia Your comment is very interesting.
I answered to you when replying your peer comment to my answer and also adding several notes that clarify my point in my own answer.

Cynthia Coan Jan 27, 2011:
Addendum Specifically, how does one apply a term with a thoroughly nautical definition to automotive applications of cranes?
Cynthia Coan Jan 27, 2011:
I'm confused! I see the possibilities for tracking down the meaning of "amantillado" from a nautical standpoint (See my "amantillado" reference), and my "luff" definition research turned up a number of definitions having to do with boats and sails (http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=define:luff&sourceid=navc... but how does one apply ships, sails and nautical terminology in an automotive context?

Cynthia Coan: My one concern here is that the "luff" definitions I turned up in a Google search all seem to apply to boats and sailing. (See my discussion entry link.) Is there perhaps another term that would work better in a cranes/automotive context?

Re: Cynthia Coan, thank you for yr comment. I read yr discussion entry. For a cranes context, please search in Google: "luffing speed"+"mobile crane" . Saludos :)

Explanation:
The described crane of the source text has three different movements/gears each one with a value of maximum speed, as follows:
velocidad de elevación máxima 5 m/min.(Max. Lifting or hoisting speed)
Tiempo de amantillado 60 segundos, (Luffing speed)
velocidad de giro 0,7 revoluciones por minuto (Slewing speed).

Hope this helps.

IMPORTANT: I wrote "Luffing speed" instead of "Luffing time" in my last added note because "el tiempo de amantillado" is indicating the speed of the "luffing gear" in seconds from one end to the other end,i.e.: from one limit to the other limit of the luffing gear.

amantillar is a nautical term used for sail boats but it is also a very very old cranes related term. For "Amantillado" spanish definition in cranes, see http://www.mailxmail.com/curso-patron-embarcaciones-manual-1...

lifting time

I can't think of any term that works better in an automotive/cranes context. See below sample spec's. for an automotive lift:

"ALM 7001
* Capacity 7000 lb.
* Overall Height 11' 11" *
field adjustable to 10' 11
* Overall Width 139.5" *
* Lifting Time 45 Seconds ... "
Peer comment(s):

neutral cranesfreak : Lifting time in the source text is indirectly shown as "velocidad de elevación máxima 5 m/min". Kindly suggest you to see my Note added at 10 hrs (2011-01-27 15:16:06 GMT).Regards :)
