Spanish term

formación de las competencias

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
Context:

La valoración de los conocimientos desde la perspectiva de una educación superior que se orienta a la formación de las competencias del alumnado;

This is an academic text about the use of student portfolios in higher education. I currently have:

Assessment of knowledge from the perspective of higher education oriented towards building the student body's competencies;

and I would like an opinion on it and/or a suggestion of how it could be better put. Thanks :D

"skills-based"

I think you'd really want "skill" here, not "competence". I would translate the phrase as something like: "Assessing knowledge from the perspective of skills-based higher education." I think we can take it for granted that we are talking about the students here.

The noun must be involved in the translation for a more natural sound.
Example sentence:

We have worked hard in the developement of student competence.

development of [student] competencies

My confidence level is not real high on this, but cross-check some online references to

"educación basada en las competencias" and "competency-based education" (CBE)

to see if maybe *competencies" (rather than "skills") might be the term called for here.

shaping competencies

The term that has been widely used in the language teaching/learning literature since a few years ago is competency (countable noun). The word competencias does not tell us much in this case! I don't opt for the word " competence" as opposed to "performance", since competence is an uncountable noun.
I suggest " shaping students' competencies"

Educational systems in many countries set clearly golbal aims and objectives to be targeted in a foreign language course, namely, the consolidation, the shaping and the improvement of the linguistic communication competencies. ( the term competency isn't limited to the field of language teaching/learning,though)
