I am considering leaving the Spanish word and using "j-ists" or something like that in parentheses. Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks Muriel...no problem.... this is a very familiar term...the 10 years I lived in "Tejas/Texas" there were very strong opinions about "jotistas"...the bilingual education classes and ESL called them "j" advocates or "jota" proponents (:>)

jotistas; jotismo
"j" advocates; j-spelling
You could say ["j" advocates] or [j-advocates], but I prefer the former. For "jotismo," on the other hand, in your context I think [j-spelling] (not "advocacy"!) would be better.

I think I like [\"j\" spelling] better than the hyphen.
