Spanish term

nutricia raíz

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature African Cuban Religious Practices
Not happy with the literal translation in this case.

"El advenimiento de la República en 1902 no cambió demasiado las cosas, las persecuciones prosiguieron, las clases poderosas negaban a la cultura cubana la **nutricia raíz** que nos llegó de África,.."

Talking about the origins of Cuban religious practices.

Discussion

Marian Vieyra Nov 23, 2010:
I only found nutritivo in DRAE. I possibly misspelt it and the 'not in dictionary' sign came up!
Bubo Coroman (X) Nov 23, 2010:
DRAE entry nutricio, cia.
(Del lat. nutricĭus).
1. adj. Capaz de nutrir.
Marian Vieyra Nov 23, 2010:
Question... Does the word nutricia exist?

denied the African roots that fed Cuban Culture

A suggestion as to how to approach this. I would turn it round something like this, otherwise the idea is awkward to express in English.

agree Carol Gullidge : whatever else, I think "denied" is important here, and credit goes to you for "African roots"! ( not absolutely sure about "fed", but this is relatively minor)// Super!

Thank you very much Carol. I would actually rephrase it as "denied the influence on Cuban culture of our African roots"
