Spanish term
ornitófago
Spanish to English
Other
Zoology
ornithology
We are talking about a species of eagle here: "Es principalmente **ornitófago**, pero también captura mamíferos y reptiles."
The word would seem to mean that the eagle in question largely eats other birds, as well as.......
My question is: is there a similar scientific term to describe the same thing in English? There certainly is in French, but that doesn't help me much!

Comment: "Since the text is from a pseudo-scientific series about local species, I feel better using a more scientific term "

Avivore
An avivore is an animal/bird that preys on birds, birds of prey for example.

An avivore is a specialized predator of birds, with birds making up a large proportion of its diet. Such bird-eating animals come from a range of groups.
Birds that are specialized predators of other birds include certain accipiters and falcons. General features of avian avivores include a skull form which is well adapted for grasping and crushing with the beak, although not especially well structured for neck twisting motions.[1] Bird-eating raptors also tend to show greater sexual dimorphism than other raptors, with the females being larger than the males.

Correction, in your sentence "avivorous" would be better:
But what makes the peregrine falcon so unique is that it is avivorous, that is, it feeds on other birds. ... While mainly hunting smaller birds (doves, pigeons, etc.), peregrine falcons have been known to hunt birds up to twice their size! So the gulls that call our city home all year long can easily become prey.

: If you say "it is avivorous, that is, it feeds on other birds", why not just say "it feeds on other birds"? :-)

Because Rick asked " is there a similar scientific term to describe the same thing in English?". And because I think anybody who understands carnivore, herbivore, etc., will understand this.

I don't see any point in using a technical word that many people won't understand.

This is actually a duplicated question, and last time plain English won the day:

Ha! I had looked at both the old and the new glossaries and they both informed me there was no such term listed. Thank you. |
