German term

Schiften

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Berufliche Lernfelder
Bezeichnung

Schiften am gleich geneigten Walmdach
Schiften am ungleich geneigten Walmdach
Einbauen einer Gaube und eines Dachflächenfensters

I have no idea what "Schiften am gleich geneigten Walmdach' is. I have only found that Walmdach' is 'hip-roof'.

Discussion

Shane London (asker) Nov 26, 2008:
Here is the response I received to my query: Schiftung in der Zimmermannsprache: verbinden (Balken, Schifter, Dachsparren usw.), einen Schaft machen, befestigen.

If Johanna can submit her comment as an answer, I can consider it for points.
Shane London (asker) Nov 23, 2008:
I have asked for a comment from the client on 'schiften'.
Shane London (asker) Nov 23, 2008:
Actually, that's 'Fertigen eines Hallenbinders' and 'Warten eines Niedrigenergiehauses.

On 'Schiften', I can only confirm it says 'Schiften' on both lines. I took it to be a verb but I don't know what it means.
Shane London (asker) Nov 23, 2008:
This from a final leaving certificate from the Theodor-Litt-Schule Giessen.
The Berufsfeld is Bautechnik. The list of items is from the Beruflicher Lernbereich. Other items on the list are:

Einrichten einer Baustelle
Erschließen und Gründen eines Bauwerkes
Herstellen eines Stahlbetonbauteiles
Herstellen einer Holzkonstruktion
Einbauen einer Gaube und eines Dachflächenfensters
Fertigen einbes Hallenbinders
Konstruieren einer gewendelten Holztreppe
Instandsetzen eines Fachwerkes
Warten eines Niedrigenrgiehauses

Sorry this took a while to respond to. I actually responded late last night but my browser froze before I could send.
Nicole Schnell Nov 22, 2008:
Shane, we need more context. Usually trainees are required to work a minimum number of hours on particular projects to get their credits. Please provide more context, I am sure the list goes on. TIA!

rafters

rafters on a hipped roof with the same incline (slant, slope etc.)

you really need a specialist dictionary, this is from langenscheidt bauwesen
Peer comment(s):

neutral Nicole Schnell : Please see my note to Jory. I do realize that the context is insufficient, however, (1) grammar, and (2) "Einbauen" indicate a required task rather than construction material.//Schiften is not the plural of Schifter http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schifter

sorry nicole but I disagree here//I know, but there may be a mistake in the source, it wouldn't be the 1st time and my answer makes sense

jack rafters

Schifter = (schräges) Dachholz, das zur Konstruktion eines Dachstuhls verwendet wird. Der Schifter ist ein kurzer Sparren, der sich an einen Grat- oder Kehlsparren anschmiegt.
See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schifter

Jack rafter:
In England, one of the shorter rafters used in constructing a hip or valley roof; in the United States, any secondary roof timber, as the common rafters resting on purlins in a trussed roof; also, one of the pieces simulating extended rafters, used under the eaves in some styles of building.

This wouldn't be the first case of incorrect spelling in a German text.

As the rafters of differently sloped roofs will certainly involve different procedures to calculate/cut to size, this seems to be a logical item in a training program.

Based on Johanna's valuable input, I suggest something along the lines of:
"Preparing the rafters for xxx roofs."
Peer comment(s):

neutral Nicole Schnell : I don't know, Jory. The plural of Schifter is Schifter. Schiften means work units. Since this is about training, maybe the trainees are supposed to work a particular number of shift days on a certain type of project?

I hardly think that working shifts would differentiate between differently sloped roofs :-)
