Lathe OR turning machine? https://www.precisetool.com/blog/lathe-machining-and-turning...

OR both - see "Modern CNC Lathe Turning Machine" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9htuGLegbI
Kim Metzger Aug 6, 2022:
As Herr Gleim correctly indicates, skimming machines are typically used for brake linings. But you're looking for a machine for graphite electrodes.

A lathe (/leɪð/) is a machine tool that rotates a workpiece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that axis.[1]
Lathes are used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, thermal spraying, parts reclamation, and glass-working.

Diamond turning is turning using a cutting tool with a diamond tip. It is a process of mechanical machining of precision elements using lathes or derivative machine tools (e.g., turn-mills, rotary transfers) equipped with natural or synthetic diamond-tipped tool bits.

Computer numerical controlled (CNC) lathes are rapidly replacing the older production lathes (multispindle, etc.) due to their ease of setting, operation, repeatability and accuracy. A CNC Turning Lathe is a Computer Controlled piece of machinery. It allows basic machining operations such as turning and drilling to be carried out as on a conventional lathe.

Facing in machining can be used in two different areas: facing on a milling machine and facing on a lathe. Facing on the milling machine involves various milling operations, but primarily face milling. On the lathe, facing is commonly used in turning and boring operations. Other operations remove material in ways similar to facing, for example, planing, shaping, and grinding, but these processes are not labeled by the term "facing."

See also 'machining centers‘:

After the advent of computer numerical control (CNC) in the 1960s, milling machines evolved into machining centers: milling machines augmented by automatic tool changers, tool magazines or carousels, CNC capability, coolant systems, and enclosures. Milling centers are generally classified as vertical machining centers (VMCs) or horizontal machining centers (HMCs).
The integration of milling into turning environments, and vice versa, began with live tooling for lathes and the occasional use of mills for turning operations. This led to a new class of machine tools, multitasking machines (MTMs), which are purpose-built to facilitate milling and turning within the same work envelope

Note from asker:
Thanks, Johannes. Turning machine it is, see https://pioneerserviceinc.com/blog/turning-vs-milling-whats-the-difference-for-precision-machining/
According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lathe, such a machine is a "lathe". Which term to use: turning machine or lathe?
