Apprivoiser les Zombies. Psychodrame adlérien d’enfants au XXIe siecle
De nombreux changements sont intervenus dans la vie des familles et des enfants á partir de la deuxieme moitié du siecle dernier -- changements dans la sociologie des familles (fréquence des divorces et reconstruction des familles, nombre croissant des familles monoparentales, marginalisation, chomage), mais aussi des changements philosophiques et morales (déconstruction, droit á la désobéissance, mise en question des valeurs recues) -- dont nous devons tenir compte dans l’approche clinique des enfants. Cela nous oblige á reconsidérer la méthodologie de notre approche psychothérapique.
Á ces changements se sont ajouté, dans les pays qui avaient subi la domination soviétique, des transformations économiques, sociales et mentales dues au passage du socialisme au capitalisme, en prélude á leur integration á la communauté européenne, transformations qui ont également affecté la vie des familles.
Pour aborder la problématique des enfants du XXIe siecle, la psychothérapie doit donc tenir compte de nombreux changements intervenus dans l’univers psycho-social des enfants. Nous nous proposons de nous limiter ici á l’un des aspects, primordial á notre avis, qui a changé de fond en comble non seulement l’emploi du temps mais aussi les préoccupations, la mentalité, les habitudes voire les passions des enfants, á savoir l’intrusion dans leur univers imaginaire de la télévision et du monde virtuel.
La télévision a fait irruption dans la vie des enfants au cours du siecle dernier. Les statistiques américaines évaluaient le temps d’écoute des enfants á 3 heures et demie par jour (7o% des enfants des HLM y consacreraient 3-4 heures ou plus en Hongrie). Les enfants peuvent voir á la télé des films diversifiés, fascinants, parfois primitifs, parfois riches en action. Les statisticiens américains qui sont friands d’approches quantitatives ont estimé qu’avant ses 12 ans un enfant assiste á 244.OOO actions agressives dont 14.OOO meurtres. Cette violence contribue á éveiller l’anxiété des enfants et á banaliser voire á autoriser la violence. Les enfants des maternelles n’en sont pas dispensés. (Rappelons la panique qu’a suscitée en 1965 le film Belphégor chez les enfants des maternelles).
Une des nouvelles mentalités qui ont acquis droit de cité est le droit á assouvir, á chaque instant et sans limitation, son propre désir. Cette tendance que la publicité commerciale encourage et que la télévision attise est intériorisée, certes, non seulement par les enfants mais principalement par eux. Mais puisque cet assouvissement n’est pas possible dans le monde réel, l’enfant a recours á un monde parallele pour y compenser voire surcompenser son sentiment naturel et incontournable d’infériorité, de devenir toutpuissant. De tous temps les enfants se sont créé par le jeu un monde á eux. Il leur était également possible de s’évader dans le monde merveilleux des contes, ce qui leur permettait de s’identifier au Petit Poucet ou au fils cadet du roi partant á la conquete du monde et finissant par conquérir la princesse et le royaume.(Cf á ce sujet Bettelheim.)
L’i n t r u s i o n d u m o n d e v i r t u e l d a n s l’i m a g i n a i r e e n f a n t i n
L’ordinateur, l’imagerie virtuelle, fait désormais partie du style de vie des familles. Selon une statistique récente, les familles francaises (deux parents avec au moins un enfant de 7 ans ou plus) disposent en moyenne de 14 écrans. Le virtuel exerce une fascination sur les enfants. Les jeux accessibles par ordinateur, les consoles de jeux (cadeau le plus recherché dans les magasins francais Noel dernier) font rage. Les enfants y consacrent plusieurs heures par jour. Qu’est-ce qui fait son extraordinaire attrait? Les motivations sont multiples, á commencer par la mode.
Il est curieux de constater que ces univers paralleles, fortement dépersonnalisés, oú un sosie nommé avatar remplace le copain réel, font appel principalement aux besoins affectifs des adultes et des enfants. L’un des réseaux les plus fréquentés, Second Life, qui compte plus de 8 millions de résidents, incite les gens á participer en alléguant que l’adhérant pourra „établir avec ses avatars un contact affectif intense”. C’est par une incitation du meme genre qu’ils recrutent les enfants.
„More and more websites are offering social network opportunities for young children. Much, like My space and Facebook function for teenagers, these sites allow children to connect with one another and to participate in live chat. The sites can provide valuable educational tools but those kids might be missing out on the positives that real-world social friendship have” says one expert (dr David Bickham).
L’enfant est invité á se projeter dans un monde parallele qui, pour combler un vide affectif important, offre des amitiés virtuelles. Mais l’impact psychologique de ce monde est plus large. Il offre aux adhérants la possibilité d’assouvir tous leurs désirs. De plus, il leur permet de disposer d’un pouvoir illimité. C’est ainsi que le désir du pouvoir absolu individuel est satisfait sans aucune contrepartie, c’est-á-dire sans la socialisation au sens adlérien. Le virtuel introduit l’enfant dans un monde oú certains de ses besoins psychologiques profonds trouvent une pseudo-satisfaction. „C’est que les mondes virtuels sont de merveilleux espaces potentiels” (Tisseron, p.2o8).
En se référant á Winnicott, le psychiatre-psychanalyste francais Serge Tisseron constate que dans l’espace potentiel du monde virtuel l’enfant ne distingue pas clairement ce qui vient de lui et ce qui vient de l’extérieur. Il cherche á y satisfaire son double besoin de maitriser et de dépasser ses angoisses. Dans cet espace, pour réussir á soulager son psychisme et ce qui l’accable, il a besoin d’un support. Comme le fait remarquer le docteur Tisserand, c’est le clavier et la souris qui lui serviront de support dans ce voyage. C’est par ce biais qu’il arrive á incarner les diverses facettes de soi-meme.
L’espace potentiel du psychodrame d’enfants est, comme nous le verrons plus loin, appelé á satisfaire les memes besoins, á savoir, á soulager son psychisme. Seulement les supports que cet espace met á leur disposition sont d’une toute autre nature puisque ce sont des etres réels, adultes et enfants, qui entrent dans son espace de jeu pour partager avec lui (sharing) son espace potentiel.
Celui dont l’évolution ne permet pas d’avoir acces á l’espace du jeu partagé, réalise dans le monde virtuel une relation plus archaique, celle du jeu en miroir. Ce sont des échanges que Daniel Stern (Stern 1989) appelle „dialogue tonico-postural précoce”. De quoi s’agit-il? Face au jeune enfant, la mere reproduit ses gestes et sa mimique, ou mieux, elle réfléchit par ses gestes et ses mouvements á elle ce que le petit ressent. Dans une résonnance duelle, mere et enfant éprouvent donc des émotions partagées. C’est ce genre de relation gémellaire retardée que, selon Serge Tisserand, l’internaute réalise avec son avatar, en jubilant. Nous avons nous-memes rencontré des enfants qui, á défaut de relation en miroir, s’étaient inventé des doubles ou des freres jumeaux.
Le troisieme type d’utilisation de l’ordinateur est le plus archaique et peut-etre le plus inquiétant. Toujours selon Serge Tisserand, „il existe des formes de dépendance de l’ordinateur qui sont une sorte de remake de la situation originaire”. L’enfant ne s’intéresse pas vraiment au contenu du jeu, ni á sa signification, mais seulement á l’état d’excitation que le jeu déclenche en lui. Redoutant d’etre submergé par des sensations intérieures intenses, il agite le joystick, frappe sur les touches, et s’installe dans un espace apaisant pour autant qu’il est autre. L’enfant attend de la machine qu’elle lui serve d’excitation et de pare-excitation. Dans ce circuit-lá, les enfants deviennent dépendants et ne peuvent plus se passer de ce que Tisserand appelle „la mere-ordinateur” (op.cit. p.215). Nous avons connu une enfant de 11 ans „zapeuse” qui, s’installant devant l’ordinateur, allait compulsivement de poste en poste. Par la suite elle parvint á choisir ses programmes préférés, comme celui qui lui permettait de se construire un etre vivant (un oiseau par exemple) et de lui changer sans cesse les vetements. Cette fillette, abandonnée á la naissance et adoptées á l’age de 3 ans et demie, favorisait l’ordinateur á toute échange avec des personnages réels. Face á ce syndrome certains spécialistes préconisent une médiation thérapeutique permettant au patient d’utiliser le jeu video pendant une partie de la séance. Une de mes éleves travaillant en thérapie individuelle avec une fillette, s’est aussi décidée á recourir á cette methode pour pouvoir établir le contact. Entré dans son bureau l’enfant lui a aussitot posé la question: mais oú est l’ordinateur?

Since the middle of the 20th century, profound changes have transformed the lives of families and children-----changes in the sociology of the family (frequency of divorce and reconstruction of families, growing prevalence of single-parent households, marginalization, unemployment) as well as philosophical and moral changes (deconstruction, the right to disobey, questioning of traditional values)----all changes we must take into account in our clinical approach to children. Indeed, these changes oblige us to reconsider the methodology of our psychotherapeutic practice.
In the nations that endured decades of Soviet domination, we must additionally take into account the sweeping economic, social and spiritual transformation caused by the passage from socialism to capitalism, in a prelude to their ultimate integration in the European community, a transformation that also has had a profound impact upon family life. To appreciate the psychological predicament of 21st century children, psychotherapy must respond to the numerous changes that have intervened in their psychosocial universe. We propose to limit our examination here to one of these changes, a critical one in our opinion, which not only has fundamentally changed children’s use of time but also their preoccupations, mentality, habits, even their passions, to wit the intrusion into the universe of their imagination of television and the virtual world.
Television irrupted upon the life of children over the course of the last century. American statistics put the daily scope of children’s television viewing at 3 ½ hours (70% of Hungarian children in low-cost housing devoted 3-4 hours or more to the tube). Children watch a variety of shows, some fascinating, some primitive, some action-packed. American statisticians, partial to such quantification, estimate that by the age of 12, a typical child viewer has witnessed 244,000 violent acts among them 14,000 murders. Such violence contributes to raising children’s anxiety level, and normalizing, even sanctioning violence. Even pre-school children are not spared this exposure. (Let us recall the panic that was provoked in 1965 by the film Belphégor when viewed by pre-school children).
A new value that has achieved great ubiquity of late is that every individual has the right to fulfill, at every moment and without limitation, his/her own desire. Viewers, especially children, internalize this tendency, promoted by commercial advertising and inflamed by television. Yet since perfect fulfillment is impossible in his/her real world, the small child turns instead to a parallel virtual universe that compensates and even overcompensates for his/her natural and inescapable sense of inferiority—to become all-powerful. Children have always constructed a personal world for themselves by means of play. They have also always been able to escape into the marvelous world of children’s stories, allowing them to identify with Tom Thumb or the young prince who sets off to conquer the world and ends up capturing the princess and the kingdom. (cf Bettelheim).
The intrusion of the virtual world upon the child’s imagination
With its profusion of virtual imagery, the computer has become a mainstay of family life. According to a recent statistic, French families (two parents with at least one child aged 7 or older) own an average of 1.4 screens. The virtual world fascinates children. Computer games accessible on line or by means of committed game consoles (the most sought-after gift last Christmas) are the rage. Children devote many hours of every day to them. What determines their extraordinary appeal? The motivations are multiple, beginning with fashion. It is astounding to realize that these parallel universes, so vigorously depersonalized, where an entity called an “avatar” replaces a real friend, appeal so directly to the unmet emotional needs of adults and children. One of the most popular channels, Second Life, which claims more than 8 million inhabitants, solicits participation by claiming that members can “establish intense emotional connection by means of avatars.” Through similar claims, they also recruit children.

The child is invited to throw him/herself into a parallel universe that offers virtual friendship as a means of filling an important affective void. But the psychological impact of this world is even broader. It offers participants to fulfill their every wish. Moreover, it grants children unlimited power. In this way, their wish for absolute personal power is satisfied without any counterweight, that is to say, without socialization in the Adlerian sense. Virtual reality introduces the child to a world where certain profound psychological needs achieve pseudo-satisfaction. “It is that virtual worlds are marvelous potential spaces.” (Tisseron, p.208).
Citing Winnicott, the French psychiatrist-psychoanalyst Serge Tisseron asserts that in the potential space of the virtual world the child does not clearly distinguish between what comes from within and what comes from outside. The child seeks to satisfy his/her double need to master and overcome anxiety. But the child needs support in order to succeed in self-soothing and overcome what oppresses him/her. As Doctor Tisseron notes, it is the keyboard and the mouse that will serve as the child’s supports in this journey. It is through this expedient that the child comes to integrate the diverse facets of his own self.
As we shall see later, the potential space in children’s psychodrama is analogously called upon to satisfy the same needs, that is, to soothe the psyche. But the supports that psychodrama places at the child’s disposition are of an entirely different nature because here there are real beings, adults and children, who enter into a field of play to share a potential space with the child.
For the child too undeveloped to have access to shared play, the virtual world reproduces a more primitive relationship, that of the mirror game. These are the exchanges that Daniel Stern (Stern 1989) calls “precocious tonic-postural dialogues”. What do they consist of? Facing the young child, the mother reproduces his/her gestures and expressions and mimics them, or better still, she reflects by her own gestures and movements what the little one experiences. In dyadic resonance, mother and infant experience shared emotions. It is this regressed genre of jubilant twinship relatedness that, according to Serge Tisseron, characterizes the experience of the internaut meeting his avatar. We have personally encountered children who, lacking a mirror relationship, invented an imaginary double or twin brother/sister.
The third form of computer use is the most primitive and perhaps also the most disturbing. Once again according to Serge Tisseron, “there exist forms of dependency upon the computer that are a sort of remake of the primal situation.” The child is not interested in the content or the meaning of the game but only in the state of excitation the game triggers in him. Seeking to avoid drowning in a flood of internal sensation, the child moves the joystick, attacks the keys, and throws himself into a space where he is other. The child uses the machine as a self-stimulator and self-soother. In this cycle, children become dependent and cannot do without what Tisseron calls the “mother-computer.” (op.cit. p.215). We also have seen a child of 11 “the clicker” who, sitting at the computer surfed compulsively from site to site. Eventually, she was able to choose her favorite programs, like one that allowed her to construct a living creature (a bird, for example) but then ceaselessly persisted in changing its clothes. This little girl, abandoned at birth and adopted at the age of 3½ preferred the computer to any real interpersonal exchange. Faced with this syndrome, some specialists have recommended a therapeutic method that allows the patient to use the video game during part of each session. One of my students, working in individual therapy with a little girl, also experimented with this approach as a means of establishing contact with her patient. The moment she arrived in the office, the little girl would ask, “but where’s the computer?” The special relationship with the computer thus would provide a means of compensating for perturbed relationships in the world.
