When it's cold and rainy outside I tend to work more, perhaps to forget the nasty weather. During the nicer days outdoor activities are calling - which will still not keep me from working, but...

Sometimes May 16, 2010

If it's a lovely day I'm more likely to go out and enjoy it, leaving any non-urgent work to be done in the evening. Fortunately (!) this is not a dilemma I've had to face much this year...

However, it doesn't exactly affect my productivity or performance - I translate at the same speed regardless of pressure systems!

If I have work on, I do it. It takes precedence for me over social or family affairs, since I am freelance and I cannot normally afford to be idle, and need the fruit of my labours (money) to be able to indulge in social or family activities. QED.
If I do have enough work to keep me going and the weather is rubbish (cold, wet or windy etc) I am only too happy to have something to do to pass the time that is also lucrative. Living in the hills 40 minutes from the city is great, but when the

If I do have enough work to keep me going and the weather is rubbish (cold, wet or windy etc) I am only too happy to have something to do to pass the time that is also lucrative. Living in the hills 40 minutes from the city is great, but when the weather turns bad, if I don't have work to occupy myself it can be pretty grim
If, like today (Sunday) it is nice, sunny and warm, there is always the temptation to slow down a bit, potter in the garden, walk/play with the dog etc. but in general I prefer to have work to do, otherwise I get bored and restless quickly. Luckily enough, today I have only 300 words to translate, which I am about to do now, before lunch, undertaking the task in a relaxed attitude similar to when doing a Sunday crossword...

Speaking of weather, we just had mini storm... May 16, 2010

....which was enough to knock out our power. (We're in a developing area where this happens quite frequently.) Blackouts mean no air-conditioning, no fans, no lights, no running water for an hour... And, it's been unusually hot this season--as high as 108°F / 42°C!

No lights, a "beeping" computer, and sitting in the heat is stressful....They haven't (yet) prevented me from finishing jobs on time, but I wouldn't want to get hit with one during a rush job. Seems there's potent

Seems there's potential for affecting productivity and performance....Ouch! Does anyone else have problems like that??

And, I sure do understand neilmac's, janed's and Thayenda's feelings towards weather.

The weather here in Lima is not that changeable; we never have hurricanes, tornados, storms, heavy rain or wind, snow or hail. For my husband who comes from Europe, this is very boring! The 3-4 months of summer it can be between 25-28ºC; in winter, down to 16ºC. Average temperature during the year is 21 ºC, and the only 'drastic' temperature change is some drizzle and a bit of mist during winter. Can't be affected by that.

The seasons rule here! May 16, 2010

Am I the only translator that checks the weather forecast as well as my diary before quoting for a project?!

The weather doesn't really affect my productivity when I work, but it certainly affects how I like to organise my schedule. I have land and animals to care for, and their needs are governed largely by the seasons and the weather, which I try to take into account when accepting work.

Short cold winter days = intense work (stops me trying to hibernate).

Snow = time / physical effort to clear it, then long walks - if I've any energy left - following animal tracks, i.e. not very conducive to work!

Long fine summer days = a more relaxed working rhythm, punctuated by gardening and drinking tea / wine on the terrace, surrounded by butterflies. But as the days are longer, more can be fitted in.

Rain = catch up with paperwork (just done a week of it), even get ahead with projects. I've already done tomorrow's work.

Thunder storms (frequent here) = unplug everything, but as I still like working on paper (much more enjoyable, so sometimes more efficient in terms of results than the computer), I can carry on translating by "stone-age" technology. A good opportunity to clear out cupboards, or bake cakes.

We've just had a really miserable period of fog and drizzle, so cold that many of the swallows just arrived round here have died, which rather puts my own feelings about the weather into perspective.

Much more than it used to: in low atmospheric pressure conditions, I tend to wear out more quickly and my bones have a tendency to remind me of my age.
(Too) short and gloomy days are no help to see straight either, whatever the quality of artificial light. When days are bright and temperatures are mild, I can feel the wings growing...

Good weather reduces my child care problems! May 16, 2010

Not an issue during the week, but today, at long last, the sun has come out and the children are out playing in the our communal gardens, so I don't have to beg child care in order to finish today's project. And their father has been able to go off happily to play "mus" (Spanish card game).

In summer I try to operate a summer timetable, though I don't always suceed. I do slow down though, agencies offer longer deadlines in the summer months anyway. As for August, I just take it off.

Let me read that question carefully before answering... May 17, 2010

The Poll asked:
Does outside weather affect your productivity/performance?

No, "outside weather" doesn't.

But "inside weather" - by which I mean rain-water dripping through the roof and ceiling as a result of (very minor) damage to my roof in the 27th February earthquake - does tend to affect productivity (but not performance).

It also reminds me to fix the roof - and encourages me to raise my prices to help pay for that.

Don't notice any difference... May 17, 2010

because I live in a perfect climate--San Diego!

In any case, I'm always at my computer, rain or shine, winter or summer. If it weren't for my friends and my dogs, I probably wouldn't go out.

Here in Cyprus it is virtually impossible to concentrate due to the heat at the end of July and for most of August. I have learned to follow the local custom and take a holiday at this time of the year.
