All in all, way over 30 days/365, but that includes (long) weekends, odd (week)days off and holidays.

I am still working half-time and usually I use my free days, as well as weekends for translations. When i become a full time freelance translator, I may have another answer.

I always think that I will have more free time then I know you will say it is a myth, but let me dream a little bit

3-4 weeks in total, taken in smaller segments Aug 12, 2010

Some years ago, I used to go away on holiday for a whole month with my children. Now that they are all grown up I tend to take long weekends whenever possible...

and even then, it is difficult not to work, even if it is a quickie.
I do tend to tak long weekends where I do not work during the day, but then in the evening, I am just not consequent enough

Sometimes I am obliged to miss a day or so of work - for example if I have to go into hospital for an operation or tests or whatever. Once I had a motorcycle accident and sustained a double wrist fracture. They operated on me awake with a local anaesthetic and that evening I asked a client to bring me a laptop, and was able to continue working with my good hand and finish their "urgent" job in time the next day.

Tax and other admin activities can also take whole days due to queueing, waiting, going from place to place etc., which would be better spent translating in my view, although I understand they are a necessary evil.
As for days off taken voluntarily... who's counting? I did have a weekend last month when I actually had no work for 3 days, which was nice, but if offered anything interesting I'd probably have taken it...
I get bored when I have no translation work to do.

it really depends on many factors.

example: I usually visit my parents for a couple of weeks and then I have some days abroad. When I visit my parents I usually work as I do at home, but this year I was able to deliver some translations earlier than expected so I have been able to take some days off.
in total, in 1 year I can have between 7 and 21 days off.

1-2 weeks for me and for this year Aug 12, 2010

but really depends.

This year is very peculiar. So, no holidays but rest at home. Some days out (swimming pool, river) and some days in (PC, studying, some job).

Do not know if it works this way...

Nice holidays and rest to everybody.

I take probably half time off, half time working, and no suffering.

something between 4 to 6 weeks Aug 12, 2010

Considering that I work most days more than the "usual" 8 hours and sometimes on weekends, I think 4 to 6 weeks is not too much... and my eyes and my back already suffer from sitting in front of my computer all the time. While I love my work, I also like to do other things like reading books and traveling the world...

@Henry... I am jealous I would like to strike the balance between happy customers, nice income, good work and a good portion of free time... but then, don't we all?

About eight weeks Aug 13, 2010

Not counting "weekends" (by which I mean two days a week - not necessarily Saturday and Sunday). But I work part time most of the time, so I'm guessing I'm more like Henry in this particular case. I just don't see the point of working myself into an early grave...
