Nothing seems to work Apr 3, 2011

There are smears on my screen which seem to have become part of the screen itself. I have 'screen cleaners' and 'surface wipes' and they don't really do much.

Damp microfiber cloth followed by dry microfiber cloth (preferably special for glass)

Synthetic chamois Apr 3, 2011

There is a chamois-like synthetic polyvinyl acetate-based material called Plas Chamois or Super Chamois (there are probably other names, too). It's usually sold in yellow tubular plastic containers about 20 cm long and 7 cm in diameter, and is supposed to be always kept wet (hence a dedicated container). I haven't seen anything better to wipe any dirt off smooth surfaces. It is machine-washable, too.

Buy a new one. They are increasingly affordable nowadays. The last one I bought warns the user not to try cleaning it with anything at all so this seems to be the only resort.

The one and only time... Apr 3, 2011

...I got round to cleaning the screen, the laptop was stolen a few hours later. So I'm not doing that again. Why should the thieves enjoy an unhindered view?

How come your screen gets so dirty? Apr 3, 2011

Do you brush your teeth in front of it, is that it?

... to do with the language I use every time I am offered a job at half my (quite reasonable) rate or when my translations are "corrected" by someone who "knows a bit of English".

just where do those spots come from! Apr 3, 2011

i don't sneeze or eat in front of my laptop!
for the laptop screen i use the same cleaning cloth i use on my glasses, the same type. Sometimes just dampen it a little. For the desktop, I used spray cleaner that i used on my glasses, spray it on a soft cloth and rub carefully.

My routine Apr 3, 2011

I have a MacBook Pro, and the screen seems much easier to clean than other ones I've had in the past. I use two soft cloths and some toilet paper. I put a cleaning product we have here called Veja on the first cloth, then I dampen the second cloth to wipe it off. Finally, I thoroughly dry everything with toilet paper. It comes out perfect. I use the same system for the keyboard, trackpad, etc.

Vinegar Apr 3, 2011

I've found the best method is to wipe the screen with a soft cloth wrung out in warm water with a few drops of malt vinegar added (NOT balsamic vinegar or anything posh!) and then, if necessary, wipe dry with another soft cloth.
Vinegar has so many practical uses - in addition to sprinkling on chips - it's brilliant for cleaning windows, mirrors, etc. too, and is so much cheaper than less effective commercial products.
Yes, where does all that gunge come from?
I also use a few

I also use a few drops of malt vinegar when rinsing my hair - it helps get all the soap or shampoo out, especially in hard water areas.

One swift move Apr 3, 2011

I clean both my laptop and my desktop screen with the same prefabricated cleaner I use on my glasses. No dripping, no smearing, just plain clean.

Amazing how much clearer the "picture" gets after having put one of them to use.
