I currently have Trados 7.0 installed on my laptop and have purchased Trados Studio 2011. My operating system is Windows 7 Flagship. Can I install both Trados versions on Windows 7? I do not want to uninstall Trados 7.0 because I still use it quite a lot. If not, can I install Trados Studio 2011 on Windows XP mode for Windows 7, so that I have Trados 7.0 on Windows 7 and Studio 2011 on Windows XP? Will there be any problems verifying the licenses?

hi Mark, of course you can have both applications installed on the same computer. no need to uninstall Trados 2007, specially if you still use it!
Studio 2011 should install itself smoothly regardless of having or not Trados 2007 installed. no issues with your licences. you will still have both in the My Licences section of your My Account section.
I have a Windows 7 Professional 64 bits laptop and both applications run smoothly.

Studio usually comes also with SDL Trados, so my experience is that the best is to check your version comes with the two packs and then uninstall your version and install the new Studio. You will get both sotwares and they will work ok. I have done that 18 months ago and also have Windows 7 and Office 2007. Never had any conflicts since.

SDL had me return my 2007 license prior to downloading Studio 2011. Then I reactivated the 2007 license.

I currently have Trados 7.0, not Trados 2007. It is an old version, but it is very much different from Trados 2007. I googled and found out there was one guy who shared his experiences that Trados had detected two versions running and reversed them to Demo versions. Wow!!!
Anyone using Trados 7.0 and Studio 2011 on one computer?

There is still a slightly difference. Mine is Trados 7.0 while yours is Trados 8.0. But it is great to know that you were successful with similar situation.

Sorry for the confusion (I mixed Trados 7 and Trados 2007). However, I don't think it would make a difference with Workbench. What usually seems to cause compatibility problems is MultiTerm, so if you are using it, you would want to make sure MultiTerm 7 (or whatever the version included with Trados 2006 is called) can be used in parallel with MultiTerm 2011. If you had Trados 2007, you could use MultiTerm 2011 with it. However, I don't think you can use MultiTerm 2011 with Trados 2006.

Hi Mark,
I have not come across this scenario where the licenses revert to demo, but running an older version than SDL Trados 2007 Suite (the one Dominique runs) could be the cause of some problems. When Studio is installed it looks for 2007 and if it's not installed will install its own version of Trados 2007 Suite behind the scenes. If an earlier Trados 2007 is found, it's left alone so that we don't interfere. In those circumstances most things will still work as there was little change but where 2007 Suite fixed bugs and handled things that older versions would not then you could find yourself with problems. The recommendation would be to upgrade to Suite which is the supported version of Trados 2007 and then there should be no issues.
There was a post in ProZ last week from a user running Trados 6.5 with Studio 2011 and this prevented correct upgrade of Translation Memories in Studio 2011. It was resolved by uninstalling 6.5 and installing 2011 again with the 2007 Suite components.

No. Studio comes with the necessary components (based around Trados 2007 Suite) to handle legacy files and do some of the things you would need Workbench for. But it does not come with a complete installation of Workbench that you can run and use as you do now.

If you are sent the original Word files, and not bilingual Word files then you will still need Workbench to turn them into unclean files first. Studio will work with these unclean files but it cannot create them in the same way Workbench can with the same segmentation etc.
Some users find that their customers are happy working in a different way, so perhaps you could investigate this.
1. Open the word file in Studio and translate it
2. Use the SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter to convert this to a Trados style "unclean file"
3. Send the real target file from Studio and the unclean file to your client
This workflow won't suit all customers because the "unclean" file is really an xliff converted to an "unclean" file and is not the original word document converted. But some find this works... depends on your customer.
If they need to be able to recreate the original format from the "unclean file" themselves then you will have to use Workbench. In this case you are probably better off upgrading your version of Workbench to the latest supported version, SDL Trados 2007 Suite.

You probably won't be able to do it, see the recent thread Studio 2011 installation on drive D: on the Yahoo mailing list.

That would probably be your best/safest bet, although there's a lot of overhead involved in running an application in XP mode.
