At the beginning of 2013 I targeted and achieved a higher gross income than 2012 after 8 months. The net income will be about the same. The position now is that I do not have to estimate what my earnings will be by 31 December 2013 - unless clients suddenly change their payment practices. In 2014, the targets will definitely have to be higher!
Lower than 2012 | Dec 3, 2013 |
...but higher than 2011. The main focus to keep me happy is that my yearly gross turnover stay above a certain threshold. No real trend in the past years in terms of turnover, but work comes in more roller-coaster-like (too much or too little) than before 2008, where incoming work was more continuous and smoother. But over a year it evens out. Philippe
So far in 2013 I've made much, much more than any other year in my my 21 years of freelancing. That's the good news. The bad news is that the organization that rocketed me into the stratosphere recently sent out an e-mail saying there will mean much less work for its freelance translators in 2014 because of a reorganization.

but only because I worked less from my side
...most probably Because I just had to shed my main customer around summer because they were turning into an unbearable monster. Good riddance! I recovered because I have another customer who is throwing as much work that I can handle at me right now. God bless 'em! Overall, 2013 has been a rough ride with too many sharp turns. ... Because I've been a very naughty boy and taken loads of time off work
Simply because life is getting more expensive and I want to spoil my family a bit more so I just have to work a bit more. no pain = no gain

I expect it to be up by about 50%. This has more to do with 2012 being a disastrous year than 2013 being anything more than standard. It gives some grounds for optimism going forward, though.

not up to the stars, but much higher than 2010, 2011 and 2012 individually.
About the same | Dec 3, 2013 |
and very deliberately so, since I don't want to have to pay additional taxes. (and life is about more than work, after all!)
So far we've seen a 20% increase in gross profits as compared to last year, and we still have another month to go. We were able to invest in some new software and hardware, and we're investing a lot of time and resources into another project that we will be launching this spring, hopefully. 2013 started out a little rough, but the last 4 months or so have kept us very busy.

My 2012 income was: 57.300,00 Euro. For 2013, If I reach the 50.000,00 Euro limit then I will be very happy. 13 was the problem for me; 13 of 2013 Saludos/Selamlar

because I have a couple of new, *very* well-paying clients
Despite the doom and gloom merchants (of which I have been one myself at times!), there is still a strong market for high quality translations. This year's total will definitely be well up on last year, as I continue to weed out the non-cooperative and impersonal agencies and encourage those who are friendlier and more profitable to work with. It's looking good for the New Year! Steve K.
