Although my default response is "Other", as the other reasons are also usually strong contenders, and this poll is no different. I certainly won't put up any snash or pushy attitude from would-be clients either.

Can't point out one main reason, there's usually a number of reasons.
"Combination of the above" would have been accurate as far as I am concerned.

Most often it's likely to be either out of my expertise or too short notice.

Creditworthy = someone who is financially sound enough to justify the extension of credit…

In my eyes, there is an obvious conflict between “unacceptable rates” and “creditworthy”, but as others have already said, I can’t point out just one reason…

For me, each of the reasons mentioned is a knock-out criterium. I would not compromise on any of them.

plus the fact that I am too busy. And the field combined with the language pair.

Most of the above, plus... Nov 15, 2016

Some are flexible depending on how I feel, how busy I am, how well I know the outsourcer, etc.

Plus, the absolute most common reason is "I'm too busy at the moment, but I can do it by ..." or "I can't do it for that rate but I can do it for ...". I very rarely give an outright "no" and almost always try to offer an alternative. It's surprising how often that drop-dead deadline or bottom-feeder rate is actually flexible.

Difficulty, above all other options Nov 15, 2016

If a job is too difficult, I refuse it. It is like touching fire!

Even if it is within my "expertise", if it is too difficult, I refuse it.

Short deadlines are not so much of an issue, and neither are long(er) payment terms, as I am (unfortunately) getting used to those, even from reliable clients.

Unacceptable low rates are, of course, a no-no...

How many translators does it take to change a lightbulb?

At least 20, it would seem, as 19 will refuse to take sides on whether or not it needs changing.

Is it really that hard to think of a *main* reason?

Mine is being too busy, so the answer is "too short a deadline".

All are major reasons, however only one can be THE main reason for declining Nov 15, 2016

Unacceptable rates means the game is over. If they can't afford my rates, after all my efforts to ensure that they get an outstanding cost/benefit ratio in the marketplace, it's not my level of service they are looking for.

Unacceptable rates means the game is over. If they can't afford my rates, after all my efforts to ensure that they get an outstanding cost/benefit ratio in the marketplace, it's not my level of service they are looking for.

Too short a deadline depends on how much "safety" has been added to the turnaround time. As a house policy, I NEVER deliver a translation late, and have successfully upheld it since 1973. So if they "pad" the actual deadline, say, with two days, and I do the same with two more days, this means that if nothing goes wrong, the job can be delivered four days before. Time for an open talk.

Job not matching your fields of expertise and Job difficulty level are two ways to express the same issue. If it's within the subject areas I've stated as off-limits for me, I'll immediately refer the client to one of my preferred specialists in this specific area (I know them personally). Otherwise, I'll state my shortcomings, and suggest that we get some expert editing afterwards. Sometimes it is impossible, for instance, to find someone who can translate and do video subtitling or DTP and is - at the same time - a subject matter expert.

Outsourcer's overall attitude is more likely to make him/her decline me as a vendor. I'll clearly state what I CAN do in exchange for what. They are the ones who will be buying from my store. I am the one who will strive for their satisfaction, on my terms. If they just want to impose their terms, I'll be no longer accountable for their satisfaction, so there is no point for them to hire my work.

Long payment term with me is costly, because as a professional translator I chose not to compete with money lending institutions. My interest rates - as a translator in Brazil (where such rates are outrageously higher than elsewhere) - make it a VERY bad decision to adopt longer payment terms with me. Domestic clients can get loans at much more favorable interest rates from banks, which - as I checked - do NOT offer translation services. Each one to his/her trade.
