Dear Colleagues,

I'm trying to help a friend, who wants to start a career as a medical interpreter (in Arabic-English language combination). I thought that getting a certificate from some on-line school would be a good place to start. There are several such courses, and of course, their websites offer the usual advertising hype - they are the best, they post wonderfully sounding testimonials on their websites, etc.

If your friend is still looking for this option, she could go to www.cultureadvantage.net and look through the options. One of them is a language-neutral on-line option.

I wouldn't bother. Nobody will teach your aspiring friend self-confidence while on the line with client and LEP. Save that dough for Christmas.

You probably mean translation? Because there is no way one can learn to interpret in an on-line school.

@Sara: what a coincidence - my friend has already finished a Culture Advantage course!

@atarget and mjbjosh: I appreciate your remarks; however, I think you guys are too negative. Of course, if one can attend an in-person course, than he should attend one by all means. But what do you do if no such course is offered where you live? Relocate miles and miles away to live near a school of your choice? Give up on interpreting? Just start looking for an interpreting job, with no p... See more

If my friend spoke Spanish, I would recommend to him, without any hesitation, Southern California School of Interpretation. SCSI offers both on-campus and on-line courses in medical and court interpreting, and I personally know people who opted for the on-line courses. They received excellent training and are now working as interpreters.

Thanks to the modern technology, it is now possible for an instructor whom you never met in person to listen to your interpreting, to evaluate it and to tell you what you need to do in order to improve. And it has some advantages - you don't have to deal with traffic (a nightmare in Los Angeles area), you can set your own hours of study, you can study in your pajamas...

Telecommuting is becoming more and more popular in the working world - why not in studying? ▲ Collapse
