Hello Ralf,

According to the FAQ, I should be able to accept payments by credit card through Proz Wallet.

However, it seems the credit card option is not available anymore.

Do you know if this is just temporary or ProZ won\'t offer this option any longer?

I submitted two Support Requests, but since I didn\'t get any answer, I am posting this here.

Thanks in advance

CC payments are indeed unavailable... Feb 19, 2003

...just checked it myself. Sorry, I can\'t tell you if that\'s a temporary restriction or a permanent change.

If you submitted your SR\'s by the end of last week, may I ask you for a bit of patience? I know that ProZ.com staff were extremely busy over the weekend.

I\'ll also point their attention to this.

Best regards, Ralf

Payments by credit card are no longer allowed Feb 19, 2003

We have suspended, indefinitely, the processing of credit cards for wallet balances on others\' behalf. I apologize for this inconvenience--we had offered this as a service to platinum members--but the function was criminally misused. We absorbed the losses and are working with the authorities, but have decided to no longer accept the risk.

Sorry to hear that! Mar 21, 2003

One of my strongest reason to join as ProZ premium member is the payment feature.

I am so sad to hear that this feature is no longer available.

I hope we can find a truly good way for online payment... PayPal does not work in my country (Indonesia).

Anybody hears a good way for online payment?

Just My Opinion re the Wallet Apr 30, 2003

It’s really sad that the Wallet is no longer available.

Dear Henry, I can well understand your emotions in the situation when you had to compensate on your own the misuse of the system, but please let me have a different opinion on this.

To prevent abuse of this service, instead of its withdrawal, why not

A) Increase the security of the Wallet, or

B) Implement a third-party solution?

I had a chance to use the Wallet only once, but I really find it invaluable for payments between colleagues and receiving payments from Western companies by non-Western ones. I think people in the better-off countries largely underestimate the value of this service for translators in disadvantaged parts of the world, where there is no PayPal, no anything.

By the way, with disappearing of the Wallet, I have also lost my 18 bucks: I cannot withdraw it, because this would cost me more than $18, nor can I use it to pay Platinum membership, because I can only $20, $30 or $60 and neither way helps me to actually use this pitiful amount. This is what I have to pay for the misuse mentioned. As well as many others, I guess. But then, this is no concern for me compared to the reasons mentioned above.

And the last thing, I am not happy about is that there has been no notification of the service withdrawal. I have listed this service as a payment option on all my invoices, and was in the process of negotiating with a client of mine to use it as a substitute for cheques (totally unacceptable option for Russian-based, for example, translators).

This is just what I, for one, think.

I agree with Dmitri... May 10, 2003

Saying that the credit card option has been withdrawn only because it was abused a few times is a lame excuse. Credit cards are abused every second all over the world.

If you guys can\'t handle it by yourselves, outsource it to a third-party vendor.

Each international wire transfer costs clients $40 or more and they would think twiñe before sending a job overseas.

Well... I wonder if you would see it that way if you had lost money as a result.

Now that\'s a bit on the high side - my bank isn\'t exactly cheap, but the highest I\'ve paid (Germany to US) was EUR 19.50.

I\'m not sure what you are trying to say, Ralf... My point was this: if you can\'t handle it, hire a vendor who has the necessary tools to curb credit card fraud.

The whole world is increasingly using e-commerce. Why Proz.com wants to move in the opposite direction? PayPal was once an independent company, before eBay bought them. I wonder why they did that...Was it an attempt to ADD this payment option to their system or perhaps DEPRIVE their members of a useless and troublesome electronic payment option? Collapse

no profit to cover risk May 11, 2003

asknine,

Your comments would be appropriate if we had a level of revenue that would allow us to absorb the (inevitable) risks of fraud, which every vendor must assume, regardless of their third-party processor (which we used).

In the case of the wallet payment service, we did not really make any money. The small fee we charged only covered our costs. It was really intended only as a convenience for our platinum members.

In the end, when we got taken advantage of, we were able to subsidize it. But not again, not on a breakeven business. Sorry! And sorry to you, Dmitri, for not giving advance notice... of course, ew were as surprised as anyone when our merchant processor turned it off...

It isn\'t - the issue is to what extent ProZ.com can add value (at justifiable risk) to the relationship between outsourcers and providers, bearing in mind that it doesn\'t get paid for the intermediation of jobs. ▲ Collapse

Quite simply, 2checkout will take Credit Card payments on your behalf, then send you a check or wire transfer every two weeks.

Without it, my agency would not exist.
