The tedium associated with everything in the list goes with the job. If those things cause significant frustration, best look for a different career.

What frustrates me is something else: waffle. It doesn't make me want to ditch translation as a career - but I have been known to ditch clients who are incapable of getting to the point.

bad writing Jan 8, 2011

The most annoying thing I've encountered is a text written by somebody who apparently doesn't know their own head from their /insert body part/.

It's this text in which the syntax is so bad that you have repeated problems understanding what pertains to what.

If your target language makes it hard to employ the good ol' garbage in garbage out strategy, you're in trouble.

And writing does get bad nowadays, non-native speaker or not.

Inasmuch as it says 'during' the translation process rather than 'in source material', I would definitely say tags. :roll

It's probably been converted to Word from a PDF file by something like Abbyy Fine Reader.

Sometimes it's just easier to write the whole thing out again.

formatting Jan 8, 2011

I just hate how many people who write documents just have no idea how DTP programmes work. Use a soft return (strg/enter) instead of a simple Enter at the end of a sentence, e.g.

The boxes Jan 8, 2011

I usually get that when a pdf file has been "converted" to Word. Should it be the case, ask for the pdf file, and Ctrl-A/copy-paste it into Word. If you can't get the pdf (and assuming you have Adobe Acrobat), create one and copy-paste the result. Formatting will be easier to deal with than the !!?*&f*%/!!! boxes, you will be able to find-replace the annoyances and you'll get a word count.

Organizational charts are another nightmare. Most of them should have been designed using a table formatting.

Text boxes Jan 8, 2011

I agree with everyone about text boxes and images that require separate translation. For uneditable images, sometimes I even have to add a key below the image translating the words used in it.
If I notice that a document has many images and text boxes, I generally try to translate those first. I find that translating them at the end, when I thought I was almost done, seems to be more frustrating than doing them ahead of time.

As for Paul's comment on the multiple text boxes for one sentence, I generally translate the sentence in just the first box of the sentence and completely delete the extra boxes. It's still tedious, but a bit faster.
