As I said before: No CATs for me, thank you (even as animals I prefer dogs), but I do have a “translation memory”: the glossaries I have built for my clients + all the translations I have made for them over the years. It’s a bit harder but much more enjoyable for me!

I'm not very "organised" at the best of times when it comes to administration.
I usually divide my TMs up between clients, or clusters of similar clients, and then within each client group according to specific subject areas. For example, my best business client basically sends me two types of document; what I call "normal", i.e. MS Word-compatible, Excel, PowerPoint or plain text, which I can work on independently. One of my business client "clusters" is in market research. It basically consists of two companies which sometimes work together and sometimes independently. I have a few different TM for working with them. One for each company, one which is merged, and one or two for verbatims depending on subject area and possibly other criteria which I can't be bothered enumerating here.
Apart from business clients, I work with a lot of universities and civil institutions. My TMs for these entities tend to be more subject area based; so, for example in bioscience I have a TM for rabbit, one for sheep, one for poultry and one for goats. I just checked and there is also a separate one specifically for "meat". But don't let all this fool you, it may sound quite organised but I assure you it's all as slapdash and cobbled together as most of my administrative stuff! ▲ Collapse

If it did, it would be by mantra.

My main tm's are organized by main subject (medical, legal, technical, general), some by specific subject (e.g. code compliance), some by client or client's end client, and some by project if a client wants one. I also use anytm in Studio but it does not allow export or maintenance, so it's just a pile of segments. I usually use multiple tm's at once and I see it as a basic way of storing all my work. It's time for general maintenance now because studio is getting slow.

I heavily rely on tm's for my memory but it is like when we moved from typewriters to computers: my brain moved from "in my head" to "on the screen." I'd swear a different part of the brain is used for either method of translating and I should try to stop using tm's.

I prefer to have only one TM for each pair. I don't like my CAT with a list longer than can be fully visible in a single window. So I have 4 TM's of mine, and a few (temporary) from clients. They get big, yes, but I still prefer them that way.

I keep mine by subject area - sort of. I've never really known whether that was the best way, in general or even for me personally. But it really gets too late to change after a while and it seems to work OK. Fortunately I never work with clients who want to see them so they can be messy .

and for the same client, (obviously) different memories for different language combinations. I cannot imagine using a different criterion to manage my TM's.

Ana, the CATs usually have a field for "Client". So, when you have one TM per language pair, if the client requests their TM, all you have to do is to filter by client name and export only theirs. If I had one TM per client, I'd have more than 50 TM's. That would make it pretty hard to clean up/remove repetitions and useless segments, etc., which I do on a weekly basis, and I'd have to select all TM's for all new jobs, since the segments you translated to one client may be useful to the translation of another client.
