What is a “Stammtisch”?
The word “Stammtisch” is German and literally means “regulars’ table”. Stammtischs are a very popular way in Germany for people to meet up at regular intervals, usually at the pub. Stammtischs do not necessarily have a particular purpose, though translators’ Stammtischs can be found in many towns and cities throughout Germany. Traditionally, only men went to the Stammtisch, while women met up for coffee and cake at a café.
Purpose of the Stammtisch
The Edinburgh Translators' Stammtisch, though organised as a Powwow, is a monthly meeting of translators and interpreters from Edinburgh and surrounding areas and intended to be as much of a social gathering as a networking opportunity. There is no specific agenda. However, if someone wants to give a short talk or make an announcement, they may post their intention on the Powwow page for the specific date and then go ahead with it on the night.
The first Stammtisch took place in January and was very successful. It now meets regularly on the 4th Wednesday of every month and already, there is a hard core of about five or six regulars.
As the past meetings have shown, we are keen to talk about our work! So far we have discussed numerous subjects from CAT tools, the dilemma of bidding for a job at low rates to gain experience and what to look out for when starting out to working with proof-readers and the problem of taking holidays when you live abroad and everyone expects you to go home.
Who can participate?
Anyone who works as a translator or interpreter or is studying for a qualification as a translator or interpreter.
The January Stammtisch, for example, was attended by a number of translators from Edinburgh and the Lothians as well as a visiting translator from Italy and a translator who is currently spending a year in Turkmenistan.
Do I have to come to every meeting?
No. The Stammtisch is open to anyone who happens to be in Edinburgh on the day a Stammtisch is scheduled whether they're in Edinburgh on holiday or whether they live in another part of Scotland and fancy meeting other translators and interpreters.
Do I have to let someone know beforehand that I want to come?
This is not strictly necessary, though having a rough idea of the numbers helps when booking the table.
How do I find out about the Stammtisch dates?
Each Stammtisch is currently organised as a Powwow. Up-to-date information on dates and venue can be found by clicking on the Community drop-down list, select Powwows and search for 'Edinburgh' on the Upcoming Powwows tab. ▲ Collapse

This could be an idea worth emulating!
We could have a third category of events besides powwows and conferences.
A Stammtisch would be, as Rebekka pointed out, a repetitive event in the same geographical scenario.
A city could have one or more Stammtischs, each with regular participants, all of them organized within ProZ.com.
Once there are several in place we could create interactions between Stammtischs! Wow!

This is indeed an interesting idea and some of us are trying (hope to have) something similar in New Delhi... though we call them powwows/ translators' meet.
A meet is a better idea as large scale powwows are mostly dominated by translators' bureaux and translators don't have much say in it. And many issues concerning translators actually get sidetracked... etc.

It is worth mentioning that Rebekka not only provided us her report on the Edinburgh Translators' Stammtisch but also the idea of having Stammtisch as a third kind of event in the site.
Some time ago we got in touch through Skype and she suggested this idea to me. I argued that powwows provided all that was needed but then she convinced me that they could be an interesting alternative.

Though I've never attended one, I understand that this is more or less what the Chicago area translators are doing at their monthly powwow. I was just in the area for a month but narrowly missed being able to attend the March one.
Regular meetings, especially with a set date, such as "fourth Wednesday of every month," could have their own listing apart from powwows.

Indeed "translators' Stammtisch" is a great idea.
I definitely think ProZ.com should include Stammtischs among its events. I would love to participate if there is one taking place in Taiwan; and I would also love to help organize this event.
