Hi!
Can anyone suggest an easy and quick way for hiding my website? I don't want to take it down completely, I just want to hide it as I'm not currently working as a freelancer.
The original site files are stored on a different computer to which I don't have access at the moment, so I would like to do that through the online File Manager in the Control Panel. I tried renaming the main_index file but it didn't do the trick.

I tried renaming the main_index file but it didn't do the trick.
...however, renaming the root HTML file has always worked for me
Note: after you changed the name, you need to force browser to reload physically the page. If you just ask for it again, it may come out of your own cached memory.

Since Google caches your website, people will still be able to see it with a bit of effort. Then they may contact you, and politely tell you that your website isn't working. If you have more than one page, people will get to them through Google searches. Taking it off the server is the surest means, and hardly a major effort.

Similarly, find the 404 - "file not found" file that your provider will have placed in your docs somewhere, and put the message on there too.

Clicking on it redirects you to the 404 file on my server. I revised the 404 file to provide useful information to visitors. You can revise yours to suit your situation.)
As for your original pages being on another computer, surely you can simply save them all again off the Web and have a local copy that you can edit if you need to? (unless I misunderstand the situation)

Option 1
Insert a "redirection tag" in all your server pages. That shall redirect users automatically to another location (URL) of your choice:
Example: visit http://wadan.arablish.com then after about 1 second you shall be redirected automatically to http://www.ahmadwadan.com
You can insert that tag after title tag as follows:
(META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="1; URL=http://www.ahmadwadan.com")
Sure you will have to replace http://www.ahmadwadan.com with another URL of your choice. However, I do not mind if you want to keep it as is
Please do not forget to replace round brackets with angle brackets of the above tag.
This option is clumsy in your case since you will have to insert that tag in every single page.
Option 2
Go to your domain name manager and change the DNS to another location by changing the DNS values so your domain name will no longer refer to the server that hosts your site.
Note:
Option 2 takes time to be effective (you can see result within 48 hours or less) or sometimes immediately depending on service provider reaction.
Option 3
If you use a CMS you can do that by a single click from the CP "Global Configuration" by selecting "Yes" beside "Site Offline".
