I just received a job notification for an in-house translation/editing position.
I understand that a potential employer can apply whatever selection criteria he/she wishes, but I think that ProZ should not allow this kind of gender discrimination, which I think is absolutely preposterous.

I don't know if this is the right place to complain, but let me repeat that ProZ should not allow this on the site.

I hope someone takes a look at this issue.

Thanks

Agree with Laureana Jan 7, 2009

The only reason for specifying gender is for voice-over jobs (I think).

You are absolutely right Jan 7, 2009

I think they should definitely be banned from ProZ.com and, if the company is based in the US or Europe (which it is probably not), adequately prosecuted.

Where? Jan 7, 2009

I looked at the job posting and I don't see any mention of gender. Are we not looking at the same posting?

Note added:
I tried again and this time went to a different posting. Indeed it specifies "(Male only)". I would want to find out the reason before calling for a ban. You should contact the job moderators.

Tough luck to them Jan 7, 2009

It would seem that about three quarters of translators are female, so if ProZ or other interested parties don't force them to change their minds, the market eventually will.

Nonetheless, I agree. This kind of discriminatory behaviour should not be tolerated on the site, and ProZ should adopt a one-strike-and-you're-out approach to this type of misconduct. That is, not only should the job post be removed, but the profile of the job poster as well.

Can somebody please contact me to tell me the name of this company so I can blacklist them for my business? Since I don't qualify (must be because I am female ), the contact info and the identity are hidden to me.

Thanks for the support Jan 7, 2009

I agree that if this outsourcer were in Europe or the US he/she would be prosecuted.

The position being offered is in Argentina, a country where gender discrimination is rampant, despite having a female president. Since I cannot change Argentine culture (I'm Argentine myself), I can at least ask ProZ.com to screen this type of offers.

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one to find this wrong.

I definitely agree with Laureana Jan 7, 2009

This type of discrimination should not be tolerated at all on ProZ.com

Unless for very, very specific reasons (like the voice over jobs mentioned above) gender discrimination (or any other kind of discrimination for that matter) should not be tolerated.

Note Jan 7, 2009

My intention is not that the person who posted the job be banned from ProZ.com, simply that all posts be better screened so that this type of offer does not reach my mailbox.

I have already contacted a jobs moderator, let's hope the offensive offer is removed immediately.

As to in what situation it is acceptable, that is a gray area in many cases.
Long time ago, when I was working on a tech. support team in-house, helping clients with sometimes quite complicated technical applications, we received a call where the person (a male) requested an engineer to talk with his boss about his application, and he said the engineer MUST be a male. We were shocked, but then he explained that his boss is a Buddhist monk and that particular branch of Buddhism forbids the monk to talk to women (for any reason). He could have talked to a female engineer through his male secretary, but given the complications that would introduce, it wasn't practical. (The secretary did not understand the technical issues the monk needed help with.)
So we put a male engineer on the line, no problem.

Just an interesting story.

Dear all Jan 7, 2009

Once again, I would like to ask everybody - if you notice anything wrong in the job ads - to click the "Contact jobs moderators if there is a problem with this job posting" link in the bottom of the page. Please do this first thing - you may discuss in the forum afterwards.

The job has been removed and the job poster asked to familiarize with the site rules.

Said job has been squashed Jan 7, 2009

Please note that many posters who have been vetted in the past (etc) can post jobs which normally don't go through a vetting process. Yet many of those posts are still being checked (in the end), be it by a ProZ.com member or by a Job Moderator.

If anyone spots a job containing irregularities, simply notify one of the Job Moderators or ProZ.com Staff.

No need to post it in a/any forum

Many thanks!

My guess is that they'll pick a male anyway Jan 7, 2009

Females, I think you're out of luck on this job, for whatever reason. At which point did you hope to find out - before or after you made your application?
