I was informed by P r o Z today that I am unable to quote on a job (don't want to anyway, but that's beside the point) because I do "not report expertise in the following fields: Other". However, 18 people - presumably with unimpeachable qualifications and experience in "Other" have bid. According to the poster, expertise in "Other" is a sine qua non for this job.

I willingly confess to not having formal qualifications in "Other" though I do have some part-time experience in the subject. Similarly, I do not have an MA in Etcetera nor a Ph.D. in Miscellaneous. I am currently studying for a non-advanced vocational qualification in Variegated, but have not yet graduated.

Can anybody point me towards a higher degree course in any of these subjects?

If the job requires expertise in "Other", then by that very fact it should include everyone and exclude no one.

Apparently it is being used as a filter, and in this case it is not valid.

Furthermore, "Other" should not even be listed as a "specialty". What is the logic of that?

A unqiue specialty? Jun 15, 2009

Maybe it's there for the benefit of translators who have really unique specialties. I can imagine that there are some translators who have specialties that don't fit in to any of those general categories.

Making "Other" non-exclusive Jun 15, 2009

Thanks lexical for pointing this out. I've asked site developers to make sure the "Other" field is non-exclusive.

Best regards,

Jared
