Last week when we were traveling, we stayed for several days in a place that had absolutely miserable Internet connectivity, where we were forced to rely on an intermittent, weak GPRS connection. When my partner expressed frustration that the online German-English dictionary Leo wouldn't load properly, I suggested that the try the "PDA version" at pda.leo.org. This was designed for mobile devices or lousy connections. After using that for a while, she tried to search the glossaries on ProZ and encountered the same bandwidth issues. This led to the comment "too bad that ProZ doesn't have a search engine that works with low bandwidth". I assume there isn't one.

I think term searches through a scaled-down mobile device interface might be rather useful.

What other ProZ features could benefit from limited interfaces to optimize speed in low bandwidth situation as well as to optimize the display on mobile devices (PDAs, blackberries, mobile phones, etc.)?

Probably all of them

I am using a GPRS modem at my new home and have to pay $1 per MB, which is quickly downloaded. I will soon get a cheap dial-up connection with 56K modem like anyone else in Ethiopia, but this will be very slow..

Having a mobile/PDA-friendly version of the site would be really helpful. I think this issue had been already raised in the forum.

Indeed. I found the link:

http://www.proz.com/forum/prozcom_suggestions/62964-proz_for_mobile_devices.html

Ralf Lemster mentioned that it was "on the developer's plate". This was over 2 years ago. So I would suggest that it's time to put the plate in the microwave maybe

ProZ mobile Feb 18, 2009

There is a mobile version of Proz.com but as Kevin said, it's been on the works for ages. Opera Mini does a great job sizing down pages in phones without a data plan, but still uses much more data compared to one of those old wap sites.

I really don't know of a "mobile version of Proz.com", but it works just fine on Opera Mini, like you say. The glossary search also works at an acceptable speed.
