The terribly annoying ProZ.com popup ads, which I have only seen for the first time this morning upon clicking on a Kudoz email URL, are all the more annoying because the window closure script does not function in my browser (Safari). So I am stuck with a window that won't close telling me to become a member.

I entirely agree, this is extremely annoying. Especially when you are a paying member you don’t want any popups to annoy your visitors. It was only this morning when somebody told me he was searching my profile and was extremely annoyed by this popup.
When I search other sites, I immediately turn away when anything comes up that I surely was not looking for such as surveys, advertisements, and so on. These can be a real nuisance. A visitor may not even realize that it’s not my fault, he will just turn to a less annoying site. If you are using services for free, for instance free email accounts, you might have to put up with that, but as a paying member, I find it disappointing to learn that my visitors have to experience this kind of promotion. ▲ Collapse

Unfortunately, these appear even if one is blocking pop-ups, because technically they are not pop-ups (they only appear within an active browser window), but CSS (or dhtml ?) dynamic layers, or at least they have that appearance.
And they are a bad idea, in addition to being non-functional in Safari.

The intent of the ad is not to annoy, but rather to reach those who have not visited the home page and might otherwise miss the membership campaign. I will make changes to ensure that it only appears in that case.
Mark, as a member you should not have been shown the ad--you saw it because you were not signed in. I will address this problem, as well as the glitch closing the ad in Safari.

You are right, of course, that I wasn't logged in at the time I encountered the ad (a point I had not noticed), and of course increasing the ProZ membership rolls produces direct benefits for all of us.
The most genuine irritant was that the closure script didn't work -- but of course I am choosing to use a boutique browser, that isn't even a current version . . . and so therefore am the bane of any web developer anyway.

In fact, I saw this pop-up ad while I were not signed in (I had cleared all cookies in my browser - Firefox).
I think these pop-up ads are OK for non registered visitors/users.
But as most people find pop-up ads almost only annoying and try to block them via their browsers (or click them immediately away), you should maybe consider that they might not have the impact and return you aspect (I for example cklick them away immediately on other websites not even looking at them).

Well, it appears when I visit www.proz.com. Isn't that the home page? Or does it perhaps appear because my browser logs me in automatically, therefore Proz thinks that I'm not on the home page?
I find the pop-up just silly... because I surf with images disabled and so basically all I see is a white rectangle over Proz with the word "close" in the bottom right corner.

Most people find pop-ups annoying because they have to do something about it to get it away. So why not use a JavaScript time-delayed slide in layer instead? I realise not everyone has JavaScript enabled, but I have seen slide-ins even when using a fairly primitive browser, so it shouldn't be too hard to write one.
It can slide out of view after 10 seconds, with 5 pixels of it showing on the window edge, so that when you mouse over the edge, it slides back in to view. You can also have a "close" link or "x" link on it to close it.

These flashing things are a real nuisance, and I was very disappointed to see that people at proz.com seem to think they need that kind of advertising - and, what's even more annoying, bypass the popup blocker most new browsers have. The sooner you stop it, the better.

I agree. These things are VERY annoying, and very unwelcome. If Proz wants to advertise, then go ahead and do it some other place, instead of here, which kind of strikes me as "preaching to the choir". Why bother?
And the use of underhanded techniques to bypass pop-up blockers is REALLY questionable.

Then, please get rid of all the supremely annoying animated gifs and similar twirlygigs!
Beyond being annoying, they really cheapen the look of a site and make it look very unprofessional.
