How do I donate Browniz? Aug 3, 2006

I participate in KudoZ for reasons other than points, and I am no longer a Platinum member for reasons of principle. Happy to donate 32,000 BrowniZ if anyone can use them. That would buy discounts for eight people.

Note that only members can donate BrowniZ, and the points must be used by the recipient within a week to purchase a membership, or they come back to the original owner.

Let me get this straight. In order to donate unused Browniz, I would have to buy an unwanted membership and also develop my own list of recipients?

I'll help you to get it even straighter. You don't have to do anything unwanted.

Since my offer was unselfish, I believe your sarcasm is uncalled for.

Just ignore the donation scheme Aug 4, 2006

Dear Ruth,

If the BrowniZ donation scheme doesn't apply to you (donors must be members), just ignore it.
Your outraged answer to my information is what appears to me uncalled for.

Gee. I never suspected it was a "scheme". Fascinating choice of words. Now you have me wondering more than ever about the motives of ProZ (to say nothing of the value of Kudoz).

Ruth, there's nothing sinister about "scheme" as used by our colleagues across the pond.

Dear Ruth Aug 28, 2006

please don't read what was not written. And please note that not all moderators (myself included) are native English speakers.

But yes- AFAIK, ProZ.com is privately owned commercial venue and as such it can implement its discounts policy in any way it wants.

Question remains unanswered Sep 2, 2006

Dear Uldis,

Since Gianfranco was unwilling to, perhaps you would be kind enough to help me understand why a donation of excess KudoZ would be acceptable to ProZ.com from a member, but not from an ex-member? My participation in KudoZ is not for the purpose of earning points or gaining any personal advantage whatsoever, and I do think that it may in some way have been useful to the translating community even though it does not currently enrich the business enterprise that is, per you,

Dear Uldis,

Since Gianfranco was unwilling to, perhaps you would be kind enough to help me understand why a donation of excess KudoZ would be acceptable to ProZ.com from a member, but not from an ex-member? My participation in KudoZ is not for the purpose of earning points or gaining any personal advantage whatsoever, and I do think that it may in some way have been useful to the translating community even though it does not currently enrich the business enterprise that is, per you, only a secondary motive of ProZ. So, why can non-members not donate points? Now it is just curiosity on my part, and I am in no way outraged as Gianfranco assumed, although it appears that he is. All I want to know is why. I seem somehow to have touched an extremely sensitive point, and it is not immediately obvious what that might be.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question,

Ruth

Dear Ruth,
first of all, just a minor note: we are talking about BrowniZ, excess BrowniZ, not KudoZ. My opinion about the matter is exactly what has been written by Uldis.

If the site owners have considered useful to offer the option to donate excess BrowniZ to members, and to not offer it to the other site users, that's their decision and their pocket.

My only intervention in this thread has been to explain the policy, as it stands now, not to support, criticize or express my opinon about it.

have a nice weekend everybody

I'd have to totally disagree with that proposal Sep 13, 2006

Having had the opportunity of being a ProZ.com member in both capacities (basic and platinum), I believe that the ability to "easily" earn browniz in order to exchange them for some type of reward (such as discounts) is great. Some of us can't always afford the full price of platinum membership and a person who earns browniz is NOT necessarily a "monkey with a mouse". Some of us can't always afford the full price of platinum membership and a person who earns browniz is NOT necessarily a "monkey with a mouse". Some of the browniz earned are for valuable activities like formatting terms for the Kudoz Glossary, contributing to other glossaries, posting your own glossaries or writing how-to articles. If some of the other browniz-earning activities are easier, so what? Variety is the spice of life.

The browniz system balances out the playing field a little bit and, as mentioned so often before, in any case platinum membership doesn't make you a better translator, it only indicates that you have more money to spend than others who are less fortunate.
