I would be delighted to be able to discuss some of my translation problems on a kind of a built-in-site Proz.com Messenger or Proz Messenger.It is a lot faster than KudoZ system,and we as translators often have to face with problems that demand immediate,so to say,first-hand solution,and there is no time for expecting somebody to wrtite and then making us read a longish text of several lines.I think an ideal way of solving urgent language-related tasks,is to build a Proz.com messenger or just... Isn't that what we already have? Go to My Proz.com->Messages and you'll see two tabs: received and sent messages.
You can contact Proz members by going to their profile and clicking on the status icon ("P") at the top of their profile (in the new profile layout, it is located under Contact, after the envelope icon.) A green one indicates the user is currently online, a red one indicates that the user is not available at the moment.
Whenever there are new messages, a small message appears in the user info box, which can be viewed from the main page (left upper corner, where your name, your availability indicator, your KudoZ and BrowniZ points are displayed).
Or did you have something else in mind?

As Sonja mentioned above, the functionality does exist, although not really for you have in mind. You can send direct messages to other members and users.
But if you have a general query, it still much more efficient to use the Forums or the Kudoz feature, as you never know who is online at any one time and who is best suited to answer your specific query.
And remember: it's always much more time-consuming to WRITE a response than to READ it.

I had in mind a kind of a messenger service like MSN or recently Windows Live Messenger.Within the framework of a Messenger service some urgent questions could be answered in a much faster manner,and the KudoZ points could formally be assigned in the second phase ,perhaps in some kind of other format,automazticly on condition that the answer was suitable for the site user.If this looks far too shocking for you,then sorry,Csaba and Sonja!And then,Skype is built in the site,but I think more people tend to prefer Messenger,either MSN,or Windows Live.I do also have Skype,though.
That was only a kind of an idea. | |

I don't want to open an account by Hotmail (Microsoft).
Skype is for me OK and enough. I use it for all, included Skype-Out , for SMS, video calling, conferences, files transfer (no size limit), etc.

You can suggest people who are willing to answer your questions that they use any of the instant messaging systems available (MSN, Messenger, Skype, etc), but you cannot force their election.
I, just like Fernando, prefer Skype. If someone wanted me to use Messenger to answer, I would simply not answer. Thus, if an asker wants to take full advantage of all potential answerers, he/she should have access to all instant messaging tools.

Maybe I don't understand the suggestion, but I think we already have the KudoZ system for terminology help. A messenger is a peer-to-peer tool, where you contact a person (or a few) at a time.
The site has already an instant messaging system for its members, but I think KudoZ is the best option for terminology needs, as it is a broadcast tool (one to many).

ProZ.com already has its own instant messaging feature (Gábor: go to your profile page, you will see it there as on almost any other Prozie profile page).
You are free to contact any of the collegues to ask for advice if you want to.
But what do you really want? That your (or anybody else's) questions when facing problems are spread in real time to all registered Proz.com users being online at that moment, to have somebody deliver "pronto" an answer (or "fist-hand solution")?
This would be (and it IS) a good working strategy when limited to a restricted group of members who know each other personally (as Teams e.g., that can be created but only by paying members). But this won't and cannot work with a group that counts thousands of Proz.com users.
Honestly, I would feel VERY annoyed if there were instant messaging pop-up windows opening every two minutes because someone has an "urgent question". I have to work to earn my living and I need to concentrate on the translation job I'm doing, what I don't need are incessant distractions. I would probably turn off such an instant messaging feature (and I think many collegues would) because first of all I have to get my job done and deadlines to meet.
But what's more: I use instant messaging for MY convenience and purposes and with those people I choose to get in contact with and vice versa.
I'don't want the whole world to instant message me. That's where the privacy bit gets into it.
With the KudoZ system I get all questions by mail, I can choose wether to answer right away or later, if I want to and/or have some "spare time"

It's not "only Skype".
Again, it is "freedom of choice".
Why do people prefer to use e.g. Firefox or Opera or... as a browser instead of IE?
Maybe they think these browers offer a better security than IE. Maybe the features of these browers meet their individual needs better than IE. Maybe they just appreciate the different features these browsers offer in comparison to IE. Maybe others use IE precisely for the same reasons. Maybe people are only used to a certain tool and like it as it is.

If you have the impression that it is "only Skype" it well might be because of the fact that there is a tool offering superior features with respect to others and that a lot of people feel rather comfortable with it.
I for example, like Fernando, would feel rather uncomfortable with a Hotmail or Google account and therefore would refrain from using the respective instant messengers.

1. I find quality of voice in Skype better
2. I have less problems with firewalls
3. I can have 4-way conference (voice, not chat)
MSN
1. There is a whiteboard
2. I can control the other party's desktop or selected application (or have her/him control mine). I usually watch it anyway, so it is not a security problem.
