For a start one could look at the entries in a big university library using the search terms "translation studies", "translation theory", "translation quality" etc.
But that's exactly the point, Heinrich. If you look up books in a library, you'll find shelves full of interesting titles. But which are the good ones? And - if you want to buy them instead of borrowing them from the library - wouldn't it be great to have recommendations from colleagues?
Instead of reading through the whole library, and buying everything that is offered online, to find the ones you find useful, why not gather experiences here?
I think this list could help us all share experiences, avoid spending money on useless paper, find new sources of knowledge, and probably inspire our relatives when they don't know what to get for our next birthday

Thanks,

Hi Stefanie,
Some contemporary Indian writers whose books I enjoy are Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Rohinton Mistry and Vikram Chandra. They all write in English.
Best regards,

Thank you for these recommendations, Niraja!
I recently bought books by V.S.Naipaul and Bharati Mukherjee. Haven't read them yet, though. I loved Arundhati Roy's 'God of small things'. I couldn't stop reading, and towards the end, I had to cry. Truly a great book.
