I've just read this:

As part of this initiative, Kidd plans to introduce a streamlined and improved version of ProZ.com’s online portal for both members and outsourcers...

http://www.proz.com/?sp=press&sp_mode=details&press_id=6

I thought that maybe it would be useful to have a separate pages (entry points) for direct clients and outsourcers not familiar with the ProZ.com structure? There are many elements now on the main page and although they are quite useful, it might seem somewhat cluttered. If you try to look at the site with the eyes of a direct client (who knows nothing of translation), it seems that finding the right translator might not be that easy at all... How should they now the best place to start is "Directories"?

Therefore it might be useful to put up a separate page (although a separate domain, like "findyourtranslator.com" would be even better), with a simple message ("Search through the largest translators' directory!"), simple and easy-to-navigate structure, etc.

The home page for outsourcers might be different, too, as their needs are not the same as those of direct clients.

We are working with a design firm on this Oct 12, 2006

Hi Jabberwock,

Thanks for the suggestion! It makes a lot of sense to have separate homepages for clients and freelancers. We are currently working with a design firm on this, and other design issues.

And just FYI, we currently display a box on the homepage that leads potential outsourcers and clients that came from search engines to the directory and job posting form.

Best regards,
Justin

I've been thinking about this for a while, actually. I've often wondered what potential clients think of certain forum topics. Don't get me wrong, I realise that Proz is a sort of virtual office environment for many of us - providing a "community spirit" which freelancers often miss - but I do wonder if certain topics right on the first page make a very professional impression.
I really don't mean to offend anyone, I'm just trying to look at things from the client's perspective.

I do think it would be useful to have a separate, simpler homepage for clients, pointing directly to "find the translator you need".

But, echoing some worries I read about in many fora, I also think we translators should always be able to see that page - and any page visible to clients.

I searched for the box on the homepage you mention, Justin, and could not find it. Is it not visible to logged in freelancers, which is exactly what I wouldn't want, or am I just tired a

Best,

The box only shows up to non-logged in visitors coming from a search engine Oct 13, 2006

Hi Marie-Christine,

The box won't show up for you since you are logged in, it only shows up to non-logged in search engine visitors.

Best regards,
Justin
