Has anyone already upgraded Trados 5 to Trados 5.5?
Trados offers a free-of-charge option (file download from their web site; you need to get the login and password from Trados) or you can order a Trados Release Pack CD which is sent by a courier and which will cost $45.
When I try to download the first file (89.5MB) my Internet Explorer says it will take over 5 hours!!! And that is just one file, there are at least 2 files that you need for the upgrad... See more Has anyone already upgraded Trados 5 to Trados 5.5?

Has anyone tried this already?
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks.

and got the same response. So I went for the CD and complained to Trados. When I got the CD the upgrade to wrokbench went just fine. I found upgrading my termabse into the new multiterm really difficult despite their instructions and it took hours (I have a very large termbase). I then tried to edit it but it gave it up as a bad job for the time being. Yes, I already upgraded to TRADOS 5.5
You need to download the file wit 89,5 MB and a second file wit 0,2 MB to migrate your dongle license. Optionally but not necessarilly you can download a third file with MULTITERM, if you need it (the file is approx. 32 MB).

I needed something about 1/2 hour, since I have DSL. To make the download faster, try to use some support program like GetRight (you can download a trial from http://www.getright.com/get.html ). This program splits the downloaded file into smal segments and downloads them simultaneously, so if you divide a file into 5 pieces you can get this particular file up to 5 times faster on your PC. So you can save download time. It is a very good aplication.
The migration to TRADOS 5.5 is very easy. You only need to execute the setup after unzipping the downloaded file. All profiles are kept.
TRADOS 5.5 offers a full support to Office XP and has some further improvements, so I would migrate any time. And it is for free!
Kind regards

It didn\'t take me long to download with ADSL, but guess what: The new, \"improved\" version has completely messed up WORD for me. It keeps crashing and I get weird error messages (something about USER.something). I know if I complain to TRADOS they\'ll say it\'s a Microsoft bug, so what I\'ll do is uninstall TRADOS 5.5 and start using version 5 again which was working fine on my machine.
I like the new Multiterm, though. I think you can download and use it without using TRADOS 5.5. | |

I have downloaded the upgrade, but since I have a cable connection, it went really fast (it only took 8 or 10 minutes). The only problem I encountered was that all Word toolbars had disappeared after installing the upgrade. Trados support helped me getting it back in no time though. (There is a really usefull instruction page to solve this problem at http://support.trados.com/view.asp?cntID=762)

I haven\'t noticed any significant improvements so far, and I haven\'t had the chance to find out if the free Multi Term Workstation is really worth while (seems rather complicated at first sight...) so I continue working exactly the same way as I did before...
In short, I\'m not really sure whether it is worth while for you, considering the downloading time you mention...
Maybe someone else has better experiences with this upgrade.
Kind regards,

I gritted my teeth, stuck out the interminable download (too far away from the CO to get DSL, too small and insignificant a market for the cable co. to offer cable modem connections), upgraded, and have been working in 5.5 without any problems (knock on wood!) and am very happy with it.

Migration from 5 to 5.5 went without a hitch.
Tried T-Window for Excel last week for a job that wasn\'t urgent, and everything worked fine. Although I must say that I don\'t care for the T-Window for Excel interface - it bothered me that I couldn\'t see any of the target segments I\'d already translated (T-Window/Excel has something like 4 source segment windows, the only target segment you see is the one you\'re working on).
Tested TagEditor, loved the new buttons in the toolbar for adding tags such as bold, italic, etc., but haven\'t had a chance to work with TagEditor in a \"real life\" situation. Based on experience with TE 5, however, it should be just fine.
I\'m still reserving judgment on MultiTerm iX. Converting an existing termbase from MultiTerm 5 to iX is quite complicated, and the manual does not seem to be logically organized. I found some helpful hints for the conversion in the TW_users list (thank you, Karin Adamczyk!) without which I would not have been able to create the new iX Termbase file. It\'s nice to be able to add terms \"on the fly\", directly out of Word, but editing/inputting terms in MT iX is somewhat cumbersome (I like to have more than just the terms in the termbase and often add lengthy passages with definitions, context, etc.). On the other hand, creating a glossary from an existing termbase is easy as pie with MT iX.
(FWIW: Right now I\'m using my MT 5 termbase again, I just felt I didn\'t need the added aggravation of trying to integrate the client\'s termbase into MT iX. Instead, I imported it into my MT 5 termbase, set term recognition, and have been translating happily away...)
My two cents\' worth.

I keep my fingers crossed that everything goes well when I find the best way of downloading the files.
Thanks everyone for your good advice and thanks, Jerzy, for the web site - I will have to try GetRight!
Have a nice weekend.

I also am going to try and install Trados 5.5, but I do not want to risk and burn my useful combination of Win ME, Word 2000 and Trados 5!

I\'m sorry I was being so imprecise. I am using Windows ME and a very dodgy version of Word 2000 (it\'s part of the Works Suite) which has been causing trouble occasionally even before the TRADOS upgrade.
It\'s just that the problems got a bit out of control after the upgrade to TRADOS 5.5 and since I don\'t really see the difference between TRADOS 5 and 5.5 (I don\'t need the new buttons in Tageditor), the update doesn\'t make sense for me.

I\'d like to stress again that the new Multiterm Tool is very useful. Being able to use it out of Word doesn\'t really make it faster, but it\'s got a new feature for fast word entry which I like. The migration is a bit painful, but it works. And installing the new one doesn\'t mean you have to give up your old Multiterm. You can run both versions on one machine, so I think it\'s worth trying it out! ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Upgrading Trados 5 to Trados 5.5 Trados Business Manager Lite |
