Hi,
Does anyone living in the UK have Latin TV channels (either Spanish or Brazilian)? All the searches I've done bring up old forums from 2005 etc, and most of the companies have now gone bust. If so, do you know if you can get them through your Sky dish or do you need a separate dish?
Thanks for your help.

I watch UK television shows online via an old laptop connected to my TV and I think you can get L.Am. TV stations the same way, although you might need a proxy. | | | Oliver Walter United Kingdom Local time: 01:47 Bahasa Jerman hingga Bahasa Inggeris + ... Yes, but not Sky | Oct 13, 2012 |
There are several Es, and perhaps Pt TV channels available in the UK by satellite, but I think it's very unlikely that Sky receivers or dishes can be used to receive them.
I can receive the following:
on Astra (located at 19.2 degrees east):
TV Galicia (Es, presumably European)
Rederecord (probably Pt)
Cubavision (Es - presumably Cuban)
on Hotbird (located at 13 degrees east):
about a dozen Italian channels

telesur (Es - not sure which type of Spanish)
These are all "in the clear" (not encrypted) and require either a motorised dish with 1 LNB or a fixed dish with 1 LNB for each different satllite (LNB = low-noise block = the receiving unit mounted in front of the dish and into which it reflects the received signals). I think a suitable receiver will cost between 100 and 300 UKP; dish and installation - I'm not so sure; probably between 100 and 500. Once all this is installed and tuned, you can use it and there are no subscription costs.
The meaning of "degrees east": All these satellites are "geostationary" - i.e. they are 36000 km above the equator and therefore rotate at the same speed as the earth and appear to us to be stationary. The 0 degrees position is directly above 0 deg. latitude and 0 deg. longitude, i.e. nearly directly overhead seen from Accra (Ghana). Degrees east is the angle (measured from the centre of the earth) relative to this position. From the UK: look south, then turn a few degrees to the east and look about 30 degrees above the horizontal - that's where these "degrees east" satellites are and where the receiving dishes point.
More information at http://www.lyngsat.com/ (I have no connection with Lyngsat other than knowing it as a source of information about satellite TV). There may be other satellites located further west than Astra and Hotbird and broadcasting Spanish programmes from Latin America, receivable in the UK.

Here in Brazil we get (on cable TV) channels like RAI International, TV5 Monde, Deutsche Welle, and a flock of others, not the same thing they broadcast domestically, but selected programs from that. ▲ Collapse | | | CAROLINE GUTIERREZ (X) Local time: 01:47 Bahasa Sepanyol hingga Bahasa Inggeris + ... Thanks everyone. All of this is very helpful (and complicated), so I will certainly take some time to digest it all. Thank you all for having taken the time to give so much detail: it is greatly appreciated.

If you have high-speed internet access and if the ROKU or another similar device is available in the U.K., you can get thousands of international channels on your TV for free (there is a one-time fee to purchase the box).
